Building Control Surveyor / Senior Building Control Surveyor

If you have a good level of construction and building surveyor experience you could play a key role at Sussex Building Control. We are looking for a Surveyor – Senior Surveyor, depending on experience, who is knowledgeable and adaptable to join our friendly Building Control department.

You will have knowledge of the interpretation and enforcement of Building Regulations, plus the IT skills to adapt quickly to different packages. For a senior role it is desirable that you are a qualified Level 6 Surveyor. Training and development opportunities will be provided for any level appointed.

Known as Sussex Building Control, the local LABC team is the award-winning provider of choice for all sorts of town and rural projects across Horsham District Council and Crawley Borough Council as well as having partners that work across the southeast of England including within Central London. If you can combine technical know-how with a natural flair for helping people through the building control process, we can help you develop your skills, your qualifications, and your career.

With travel kept to a minimum and plenty of potential for flexible/home/site working you’ll be assessing plans and applications for compliance with Building Regulations and legislation, as well as ensuring that all work is in line with performance targets and Quality Management System processes. Throughout, you’ll be expected to provide advice and assistance to members of the public and other in-house departments on professional Building Control matters.

Your customer skills are equally important, including the ability to communicate well with people from all backgrounds, at all levels, be they the public, contractors, or professional bodies. You will also have strong powers of initiative and problem solving, with good organisational and time management skills. You will also be willing to mentor and support more junior members of the team if appointed at a senior level.

Horsham District Council encourages and supports their employees to have a healthy work life balance by supporting their professional development as well as offering 27 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays (pro-rata), a generous benefits package and an online platform offering discounts from online retailers. Staff are eligible to join a contributory pension scheme where the Council contributes 20% of pensionable salary. The Council also provides reimbursement for professional subscriptions and access to a car lease scheme.

If you would like to apply for the role, we highly recommend you show clearly within the ‘Experience Section’ of the application form how you meet the essential criteria detailed within the Role Profile when applying. If you do not make this clear, it is unlikely you will be shortlisted for interview.

Applicants invited for interview for the Senior Surveyor role may be asked to complete Thomas’ Personal Profile Analysis (PPA) which provides a rapid and deep insight into behavioural preferences and communication style.
