Environmental Services Team Leader - Waste

Harborough District Council’s vision is to work with communities in a vibrant, safe and prosperous district and to bring the best opportunities to all.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Environmental Services Team within the Council. This is a technical role with responsibility for the operational management of the waste team.

The post is one of 2 Team Leaders that undertake the Intelligent Client functions for the Council. Each Team Leader has an area of specialism that requires them to have an in-depth working knowledge of the services provided by contractors. This knowledge (gained through previous experience, on the job and formal training) enables them to hold the contractor to account for their performance and ensure that the Council receives the level of service that has been commissioned.

The role requires someone who can manage a team, deliver under pressure and be commercial in their approach.

This role provides significant support in managing the contractor delivering the following outsourced services:

  • Waste and Recycling Services
  • Commercial Waste Collections
  • Recycling Haulage

The role will act as the key management point of contact between HDC and the contractor(s) on issues that arise.

This exciting role offers varied and interesting work for the successful candidate, as well as the potential to work flexibly, carry out site visits and attend meetings. The majority of tasks will involve working co-operatively in a friendly, success driven team, however there will still be the opportunity to shine individually.

The successful candidates must meet all of the essential criteria:-

  • Educated to A-Level or equivalent
  • Basic understanding of Environmental Legislation
  • Experience of working with contractors and members of the public
  • Experience of difficult people and challenging situations
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to remain calm, confident and diplomatic
  • Good negotiation skills
  • Flexible and adaptable
  • Intermediate MS Office skills

A combination of home and office working is expected, with a greater emphasis on office working during the postholder’s first few weeks.

The closing date for receipt of completed applications is 9am Monday 27th September 2021.  Interviews will be held on 12 noon on Thursday 7th October 2021.

Harborough District Council has an open and positive stance on the protection of children, young and vulnerable people.
