Mental Health Support Team

The role of the Primary Mental Health Worker (PMHW) in Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) is to take a lead responsibility for improving the quality of education and standards of attainment of pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties (SEMH) and to contribute to the development of the MHST.
Reading is developing its provisions to enhance the emotional well-being and life chances of its children and young people through the provision of services and arrangements that focus on early intervention and preventative approaches, including Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs). Reading is committed to providing accessible and comprehensive community-based services to children and young people, their families and carers across Reading.
MHSTs are being set up as part of NHS England and the Department of Education’s Children and Young People’s Mental Health Green Paper. These teams provide direct early intervention mental health support to children, young people and their families, as well as driving systemic change and workforce development around emotional and mental health support in schools. The outcomes of this project inform the ongoing delivery and innovation of mental health provision in schools.
• Be part of an early intervention service, to support children and young people’s emotional well-being and mental health in line with Reading’s emotional well-being strategy.
• Provide consultation to parents, schools and a range of professionals.
• Engage in evidence based, time limited direct work, as appropriate, using a range of researched methodologies and interventions (e.g. cognitive behaviour therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, family therapy, multisystemic family therapy).
• Provide training on child and adolescent mental health issues and consultation to help parents and professionals to better understand and respond to children and young people’s mental health needs.
• Contribute to policy and service development, positive mental health promotion and preventative initiatives.
• Facilitate access to assessment and intervention programmes to support children, young people and families with mild to moderate, emerging mental health needs.
• Assess, advise and manage risk. This may involve signposting or referring on, as appropriate.
What you need for this role:
• An appropriate core professional qualification, at level 5 or above, in mental health, psychology, social work and/or therapeutic intervention, and be able to evidence a high level of knowledge and experience of work relating to child and adolescent mental health.
• Registration with an appropriate professional body and evidence of post-registration training, learning and development.
• An informed and ethical value-base that is congruent with public service.
• Professional registration with an appropriate body (e.g. BACP).
• Experience of working with children and young people with SEMH needs and a commitment and passion to improving the mental health of children and young people
• Knowledge, experience and/or qualifications in delivering evidence-based interventions for mental health (e.g. cognitive behavioural therapy).
