Support Officer (single homelessness) – fixed-term contact for 12 months
(Ref. No: SO)
Salary £26,185.64 p.a.
The Support Officer will be part of the Council’s service to single homelessness clients, who are rough sleeping or at risk of rough sleeping.
This project aims to eradicate the number of people rough sleeping in the Borough of Broxbourne. You will be working directly with clients who are either at risk of, or already rough sleeping, with a particular focus upon helping clients. The project’s objective is to end their homelessness and provide an offer of independent housing, with wrap-around support from appropriate service providers to sustain the tenancy.
It is an exciting and varied role, and part of a multi-agency effort liaising with the local authority, police and other agencies. You will support clients to secure employment, manage finances and ensure support needs are provided for (i.e. substance misuse, debt management) by working with local partner organisations.
You should enjoy working with people, as you will be required to liaise and build relationships with homeless individuals and relevant support services. You will need to be genuinely committed to helping people facing difficulties in their lives with an empathetic approach. Experience working with vulnerable or disadvantaged people is an advantage, although enthusiasm and commitment are equally as important.
You will need to be confident in approaching clients who are rough sleeping in the community, and have excellent communication skills for writing up casework and interviewing clients. You will need the ability to work using your own initiative, albeit with support and supervision. The ability to work effectively under pressure and as part of a team is essential. An understanding of homelessness laws will be helpful, but the Council will give full training.
The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in fluent English is essential for this role. A driving license is essential for the role. You will be required to have a Standard Disclosure and Barring check (DBS).
We are committed to safer recruitment, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
The benefits package includes generous leave entitlement, a full training and development programme, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and free membership to the Council’s local leisure centres, which includes free access to gyms, swimming pools, fitness classes, racket sport sessions, a health suite and a range of generous discounts across other leisure and culture services.
