Museum Learning Officer

Hastings Museum & Art Gallery

“A local museum with a global collection that inspires people and connects communities”

Are you highly motivated and dynamic with a passion for improving young people’s lives through high-quality learning experiences? We are looking for a proactive and energetic person with experience of museum learning to lead the development of our schools offer.

You will part of a small team who are passionate about encouraging participation and dialogue with the local community, stakeholder groups and volunteers. You will work with colleagues to develop and deliver sustainable and engaging opportunities to achieve our ambition for Hastings Museum & Art Gallery to become a community museum. Alongside your work in Hastings, you will also support the volunteer learning team at Bexhill Museum to grow the learning programmes at both museums and increase the number of schools and pupils using both sites.

Museum and Schools programme

The Museums and Schools programme is funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and managed by the Arts Council England. For the past three years the programme has helped connect Hastings Museum & Art Gallery and Bexhill Museum with local schoolchildren and started building long-term relationships between the museums, schools the children and their families. The Museum and Schools programme was introduced to Hastings and Bexhill in 2018. Since then, the museums have worked with over 7,500 pupils and 150 schools. The Museum and Schools programme, including this post, is funded through an annual grant from Arts Council England.

Hastings Museum & Art Gallery

Hastings Museum & Art Gallery is an award-winning family-friendly museum with amazingly diverse collections. The museum was established over 125 years ago and has always offered people the opportunity to explore art, culture and history from around the world. Over the past few years, the museum has transformed itself into a social engaged organisation with a focus of working with underrepresented groups.

Over the last decade Hastings has undergone an economic and cultural renaissance. The area’s reputation as cultural centre continues to strengthen with flagship projects such as the RIBA award-wining Pier, Hastings Contemporary and iconic De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill stimulating new cultural economic activity. The town is full of life with plenty of things to do in the evening and at weekends, from the arcades on the sea to bars and cafes in the town centre sitting alongside a full calendar of festivals, arts and cultural events. Hastings is easily accessible by road, rail and bus – with good transport links to London and along the South Coast to places like Brighton.

Hastings Borough Council

Hastings Borough Council’s vision is for Hastings and St Leonards to be a happy, welcoming place with a vibrant, unique culture where everyone has their needs met and is supported and encouraged to live their best lives. We’re working to achieve this through the many services we provide, from regenerating the town centre and improving the cleanliness of our streets and beaches to increasing cultural opportunities and strengthening the local economy.
