Chief Accountant


If you are an experienced, enthusiastic, and self-motivated individual seeking a new challenge then this is the opportunity for you. 

Reporting to the Corporate Head of Finance, this role will see you lead, encourage, manage, and inspire an experienced accountancy team in providing a full range of costing, budgeting, and accounting services to the Council and its associated companies.  As well as your general accounting responsibilities, the role has a heavy emphasis on undertaking the Council’s treasury and capital accounting functions including maintaining the Council’s capital program, borrowing, and investing to maintain cashflows and systems administrator responsibilities so experience in these areas will be key.

Highly numerate, you will need to work accurately and methodically and ensure that all aspects of your work meet statutory requirements and professional codes of conduct, particularly those in in respect of treasury management, capital accounting and producing the year end accounts on which you will take a leading role.

As an effective communicator with the ability to remain calm under pressure, the scope of the role means you should be able to organise and prioritise workloads and have a flexible approach to your duties to enable you to meet the various deadlines required. Your strong technical skills will give you the self-confidence to enable you to manage the competing demands of the role whilst driving forward changes and improvements to the service.

Candidates will be professionally qualified and hold full membership of a recognised CCAB body, with a commitment to undertake continuous professional development to maintain and enhance this specialist knowledge to the benefit of the Council and the postholder.
