Service Manager (Democratic & Executive Support)

Do you have excellent management skills and experience of running an administration department?

Can you oversee research projects and write reports?

Can you work with multiple stakeholders from members of the local community, charities to local politicians?

Do you want an exciting job outside of a big city, in the beautiful town of Royal Tunbridge Wells, where flexible hours and a mixture of home and office working is the norm?

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic local Council at the heart of the community, which delivers high quality services and puts customers first. You’ll be working at the heart of local democracy, supporting Councillors and Senior Officers to make important decisions that affect the lives of residents across the Borough of Tunbridge Wells.

It’s a great opportunity for someone with excellent and current management skills, who has excellent administration skills and understands the fundamentals of running a high performing administration service. You’ll also be managing a small research service and will need an understanding of how research projects are conducted and of report writing.

The Democratic and Executive Support service administers the decision-making meetings at the Council, provides administrative support to local politicians and senior Directors of the organisation, including civic events for the Mayor of the Borough, and produces research reports for Overview and Scrutiny Committee. The work of the service includes agenda management and minute taking, collating, organising and distributing research information, organising and running large meetings and events, diary and inbox management, and general office support.

Your role will be to manage this team and ensure that work is delivered to a high standard, and support is given where necessary across all areas of work delivery.

You need to be confident and able to give accurate and timely advice to the most senior officers in the organisation, and to work effectively with a range of different people, from senior Council members, to report writers and members of the public.

A high level of accuracy, the ability to work under pressure to meet statutory deadlines, and a flexible attitude are essential.

Please be aware that this role requires some working outside of normal hours to manage committee meetings, which are delivered in person in the Town Hall (starting usually at 6pm or 6.30pm).

This is a politically sensitive role and as such you will be expected to work impartially with all political parties.

Additional benefits for this post include 26 days annual leave and an additional day in December (increasing to 29 days after 5 years continuous Local Government service), membership of the Local Government Career Average (Revalued Earnings) (CARE) Pension Scheme, as well as invaluable training opportunities for continuing professional development.  Take a look here for additional information on the benefits we offer.
