Senior Transport Planner

Wokingham Borough Council are seeking a Senior Transport Planner with expertise in cycling and walking infrastructure planning and design to join their Transport Planning Team.

This is a 12 month contract funded by the Department for Transport's "Capability Fund" which is aimed specifically at increasing cycling in the borough.  The contract may be extended beyond 12 months but this is dependant on future DfT funding decisions.

This is a superb opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated professional to join our dynamic Highways and Transportation Service. As a vital part of the Transport Planning Team, we’ll look to you to provide specialist input and utilise our consultants as required. You’ll support the team in day-to-day activities and provide cover for any element of Transport Planning.

This role covers planning for and overseeing the development of active travel schemes followed by their monitoring and evaluation upon completion. Your key responsibilities will include managing the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) process, liaising with stakeholders, bidding for funds and embedding LTN 1/20 and “Gear Change” principles into the organisation. You’ll play a vital role in designing our strategy and taking ownership of key documents.

Other responsibilities will include assisting with identification of schemes, ensuring value for money and ensuring the activities of the organisation are aligned with our active travel aspirations.

The Climate Change Emergency is at the core of everything we do at Wokingham. Your key priorities will include a focus on Carbon reduction initiatives, such as modal shift and behaviour change projects including assisting with the My Journey Team’s programme of soft measures. You’ll also work with Members, Town and Parish Councils and other key stakeholders, to ensure we meet users’ needs and garner support for active travel across the borough.

To be successful in the role, you’ll need to be well-versed in active travel initiatives with experience in delivering projects to a high standard. A thorough knowledge of LTN 1/20 is essential along with an appreciation of how engineers can design these principles within the constraints of the existing network.  It will be your responsibility to confidently respond to enquiries regarding active travel issues. You’ll also need a good working knowledge of and experience in working within local authorities with a variety of interested stakeholders along with being able to successfully bid for scheme funding.

This is a senior role within the team, so you’ll be expected to hit the ground running when you start. As well as relevant transport planning experience, we’ll expect you to have a relevant degree and membership of the CIHT is desirable.

Wokingham is situated in the heart of the thriving Thames Valley and is consistently voted both the healthiest place to live and one of the best places to live in the UK. This is an exciting time to join as the council is delivering substantial infrastructure projects and new housing as well as town centre regeneration.

Wokingham Borough Council offers a range of employee benefits including generous annual leave, flexible working opportunities and an excellent pension. We’re committed to making you feel empowered in your work, whether that’s through approachable and engaged management, or extra training to enhance your expertise. This is combined with great development opportunities, meaning you’ll feel supported and encouraged at every stage of your career.

Ours is a high support, high challenge work environment, where people can fulfil their full potential.

Wokingham Borough Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all staff, other workers and volunteers to share this commitment. All successful candidates for this role will be subject to Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks along with other relevant employment checks.
