Associate Director, Legal, Compliance and Governance

The role

To be responsible for the management of our Legal Compliance and Governance risks, developing and implementing strategies to that end with the help of a small team of lawyers and non-lawyers. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and sitting on the charity’s Organisational Management Team, the Associate Director is relied on for pragmatic, informed, intelligible advice to colleagues across the organisation on aspects such as intellectual property rights, contractual rights, disputes, data protection compliance and governance. Following the merger with Breast Cancer Care in 2019 and restructuring during the pandemic, the current Associate Director carried out a comprehensive review of the Legal Compliance and Governance function so that you will be inheriting a sound framework within which to operate and to nurture your relatively new team. This is a truly interesting and varied role and is well supported by senior management.

This role will be offered on 35 hours per week. However, we will consider offering the role on 28 hours per week if requested.

About you

You will be a confident, pragmatic lawyer with experience working in house in a senior role. You will enjoy taking time to understand the goals of your non-legal colleagues and assisting them in finding solutions that meet their business needs, whilst managing the legal and compliance risks appropriately. You are comfortable working with non-legal colleagues at all levels, gaining respect and trust. You will have a relatively new team to manage and will relish leading and developing that team. You will be professional and conscientious in your approach to work and we hope you will be inspired by Breast Cancer Now’s goal that by 2050 everyone who develops breast cancer will live, and is supported live well. It is not essential that you have worked in a charity previously if you are willing and keen to develop your knowledge of issues specific to the sector.
