Housing Options Officer

Hertsmere is located in southern Hertfordshire – we are 13 miles from Central London and within the M25.  We adjoin Greater London with excellent road and rail links making London and the Home Counties easily accessible. The Council Offices are situated in Borehamwood within Zone 6 and with a direct rail link into London Kings Cross St. Pancras.  The area is an internationally renowned centre for film and television production, home to BBC Elstree and Elstree Studios (a council owned asset).

Hertsmere Borough Council is seeking to appoint a Housing Options Officer to deliver the housing elements of the Council’s 2020 vision and Corporate Plan.

Hertsmere is a non-stock holding authority and as such faces significant challenges in meeting local housing needs.  In response to this and the implementation of the Homelessness Reduction Act, we are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with a good knowledge of housing and associated legalisation. You will need to be organised and methodical to manage a complex and varied work load.  You will need a positive attitude and caring approach towards customers and have excellent communication, negotiation and problem solving skills to find solutions for those facing housing problems.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our busy Housing Team who work hard to deliver the service effectively.  You will be able to contribute to shaping the service and have opportunities to develop your own ideas and initiatives to meet the challenges ahead.

This role provides effective management of the council’s policy and procedures relating to the Housing Register and Choice Based Lettings Allocation Policy. You will undertake detailed assessments of applications to the housing register, registering applicants and awarding banding priority.  You will ensure all requests for nominations are advertised through the Choice Based Lettings System, supporting RSL partners and applicants in the use of the system.  You will provide advice to applicants on housing options and you will undertake initial triage assessment of homelessness approaches to identify and support those threatened with homelessness at an early stage.

The ideal candidate will have suitable relevant qualifications and experience in a housing related environment.  However where applicants have limited qualifications training opportunities may be offered.

The post is offered on a full time, permanent basis (36 hours per week).

Benefits include 25 – 30 days annual leave (depending on the length of Local Government Service) plus one floating day per annum, local government pension scheme, flexible working hours (including home working), free car parking, free use of leisure facilities, cycle scheme, season ticket loans ad access to a large staff roof garden.

Closing date:             Midday, 25 October 2021
