Are you passionate about ending bad housing and homelessness in the North East? Do you have personal experience of homelessness or other related issues and want to use your experiences to make a difference? Come and join us at Shelter North East as a Trainee on our GROW programme (Getting Real Opportunities of Work). You will receive personalised training and support throughout the programme, as well as support to plan your career after your traineeship ends.

About the role
We are looking for someone who can help us get to know our community. You will be based at the Newcastle hub, and will have the opportunity to work closely with a variety of teams to develop an understanding of the housing-related issues that people face in the North East.

After an initial induction period, you will be involved with a peer research project. You will speak to a variety of people about their accommodation needs. In particular, we would like to consult people experiencing ‘multiple disadvantage’; ‘Multiple disadvantage’ is a term used to describe people who experience several problems at the same time, such as mental ill health, homelessness, drug and alcohol misuse, offending, and family breakdown.

You will be given training, support, and supervision, and will have access to a flexible personal budget to help in your own personal and professional development. Previous trainees have used the personal budget for things like courses/qualifications, driving lessons, counselling and more. About you
We are looking for people who are passionate about the opportunity to use their own life experiences to help make positive change for others. You’ll also need to be resilient, comfortable in a variety of settings, and able to remain calm in challenging situations where people might be upset or frustrated. Good communication skills and the ability to make people feel heard will also be essential. Basic computer skills, e.g. word processing, the internet and email would be useful, but support can be provided. Above all, we need people with a real desire to develop personally and learn new skills.
