Newark and Sherwood District Council is situated in the historic market town of Newark, in the heart of Nottinghamshire. We’re proud of our vast district and our national attractions including The National Civil War Centre, the Castle, Southwell Minster and Sherwood Forest. We’re easily accessible by both road and rail and consider ourselves to be an ambitious, forward thinking Council with strong values and a culture of doing our absolute best to serve our residents.
Over the last few years the Council has transformed the way it works in response to financial challenges from reducing funding. Rather than just focussing on cutting spending, we have reshaped the organisation to make it more business focussed and introduced different delivery vehicles to deliver efficiencies and improve performance. By doing so we have created a strong financial position with a flexible and dedicated workforce to deliver to Newark and Sherwood residents the excellent Council services they deserve.
We’re now recruiting for an Accountant to join our Financial Services team. Reporting to the Assistant Business Manager, you will be responsible for all Financial Services work for one or more of the Council’s directorates. This will include budget setting and monitoring, assisting with the preparation of the council’s annual Statement of Accounts and supporting with the wider activities of the Financial Services section.
In return, we can offer you a competitive salary and workplace pension, a generous annual leave entitlement that increases with service, flexible working and the opportunity to combine home working with office working. In addition to this, you will also be joining a friendly, welcoming and experienced team.
Preferably CCAB-qualified and with experience of Value Added Tax (VAT), it is essential that you have experience of working in local government finance. You will have good numerical skills and be highly PC literate. You will be able to prioritise workloads whilst meeting strict deadlines, work with minimal supervision and communicate financial information to all levels of staff.
Veterans/family of forces/ex-forces, those in care/care leavers, and candidates who declare a disability (as defined under the Equality Act 2010) will be guaranteed an interview provided they have demonstrated that they meet the essential criteria of the post as detailed in the Person Specification on their application form.
For further information or an informal discussion, please contact Nick Wilson on 01636 655317 or Mohammed Sarodia on 01636 655537.
Applications must be received by 12pm on Friday 29 October 2021
Tests and interviews to be held in the week commencing Monday 15 November 2021
