The Falkland Islands Government, Department of Natural Resources is seeking applications for the role of Fisheries Protection Officer (FPO). This is a unique opportunity to live in a small community with amazing wildlife and a 5-minute commute to work!
With direction from the Operations Manager, this role includes rostered duty periods at sea up to two weeks (on a rota system with other FPO’s) on the Fisheries Protection vessel. This will involve boarding fishing vessels within the Falkland Islands fishing zones.
FPO’s monitor compliance with relevant fisheries and maritime laws, including investigating and preparing prosecution cases as required to uphold the law for the Falkland Islands, CCAMLR and SGSSI, as required.
While ashore, the FPO will undertake a variety of office duties which will include the operation of the FI vessel monitoring system and a 24 hour on-call in the event of an emergency.
Essential criteria for the role include a BSc in a relevant subject such as, Marine Science, Oceanography or Fisheries Management, etc. or a Marine Certificate of Competency of Skipper (Full) Fishing Certificate. A Fisheries Officer Training Certificate would be desirable. Applicants must be sufficiently fit to undertake the duties of the post and capable of passing an ENG1 Medical check.
Communicating with individuals on overseas fishing vessel where English isn’t the first language can be challenging, so it’s important that individuals have a patient, assertive and calm manner.
Fixed Term Contract, up to 4 years
Starting Salary - £31,577 up to £35,133 per annum (depending on qualifications and experience) rising to £41,776.

- Eligibility for a 25% Gratuity (taxable).
41 days paid leave, 30 days paid annual leave plus 11 government and public holidays.
