Our Legal Practice spans Lewes and Eastbourne Councils, providing expert advice to our shared body of officers and both sets of members.
We are seeking a Planning Lawyer to advise on the full range of planning matters relevant to a busy and diverse local planning authority.
From a planning perspective, our area is unique in its mix of environments, including the larger urban area of Eastbourne, the historic county town of Lewes, small towns and villages in and around the South Downs National Park and a large area of coastal strip. As such, planning advice will span retail, commercial and residential settings as well as those in rural and agricultural areas.
The post holder can expect to advise on matters as varied as planning policy, neighbourhood planning, community infrastructure levy, section 106 agreements, and enforcement. Advising at planning committees will also feature regularly.
You will work alongside our highly experienced Senior Planning Lawyer, who can offer training and support to a colleague less familiar with planning law. You will also benefit from a dedicated practice manager and case management system.
We will consider your application whether you are an experienced planning lawyer, a qualified local authority lawyer looking to change practice area or newly qualified and keen to gain experience. The work activity and level of supervision and training you receive will depend on your previous experience.
To support a healthy work-life balance, the role can be performed predominantly from home, and the councils provide all the IT equipment and apps needed to support this. The successful candidate will, however, be required to attend planning committee meetings at Lewes and Eastbourne. Office accommodation in both locations is available for meetings with colleagues and clients for a more collaborative and participative workstyle when needed.
We’re a very friendly and supportive Legal team, consisting of experienced lawyers from both a local authority and recent private practice background. Outside of work, there’s a thriving social scene between our lawyers too.
