The starting salary for this role is £40,227 per annum based on a 36 hour working week.

There are over 400 schools in Surrey and Surrey Arts works in, or with, many of them. Our teachers teach in excess of 5000 young people every week through instrumental and vocal tuition, music groups and regular activities. Strategic partnerships are an important part of what we do, and we maintain strong relationships with other music hub delivery partners. We are the lead partner for Surrey’s cultural education partnership, Culture Box Surrey, and have close links with Surrey’s Arts Council England national portfolio organisations (NPOs).
Surrey Arts is seeking experienced music educators and leaders (in any discipline or music tradition) to develop relationships and manage activity in the following geographical areas of Surrey:
- Area Manager West (Woking and Guildford)
- Area Manager North (Surrey Heath, Elmbridge, Runnymede, and Spelthorne)
- Area Manger South (Mole Valley and Waverley)
As an Area Manager, you will be supported to work remotely or from a base (or bases) in the area.
These roles comprise three of the four new Area Manager roles we have created in a recent restructure and will be crucial to the development of Surrey Arts into the future. These vacancies arise at an important time for the organisation and will be key to our success in returning to area-based working.
This exciting role requires someone who can forge effective working relationships with schools and communities across the region whilst creating and establishing new work to deepen and diversify our offer.
You will lead an area team in:
- Establishing and managing area centres with an exciting music and arts offer and with close links to their communities
- Developing new relationships with schools to better meet their needs and to increase sustained musical learning by students at all key stages.
You will become Surrey Arts’ main point of contact in the area and will work closely with contacts in Surrey schools to understand their needs and to meet the opportunities that these present.
You will also work with the Surrey Arts Senior Leadership Team, Surrey’s Property Team and other stakeholders to find a venue for a new Area Centre and will lead its development as a beacon for music and arts education in the area. In line with our commitment to diversify our offer and reach underserved communities, you will share our ambition for a significant part of its programme to be co-created with local people and will be responsible for making this a reality.
You will manage a Deputy Area Manager, a Team Support Teacher and some of the instrumental teachers delivering in your area. You will also monitor take up of instruments (including underrepresented instruments) and genres and devise initiatives to ensure a broad and inclusive offer in the area. You will co-ordinate with the other Area Managers to help balance opportunities across Surrey, share learning and good practice, and identify opportunities for collaboration.
This is not a teaching role, although you are likely to be required to undertake some teaching / delivery on a developmental basis.
First and foremost, you will be innovative and passionate about achieving outstanding musical outcomes for young people. You may, or may not, hold Qualified Teacher Status but you must be demonstrably successful as a music educator and leader, in any musical discipline, and have extensive experience of working in school settings. You will also show a commitment to learning across Surrey Arts, not just for our students but for your team and yourself.
- Be experienced and demonstrably successful as a music education practitioner, in any discipline or musical tradition
- Have prior experience of leading and managing music education activity in situations where you are accountable for the effectiveness of delivery by others
- Be committed to an anti-racist agenda and hold equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of your work
- Be an organised and effective communicator able to work both autonomously and as part of the wider Surrey Arts management team
- Have high expectations of those you manage and be able to support colleagues constructively to develop
- Be a reflective practitioner with a passion for continued learning and development
- Be creative and innovative, with a collaborative approach
- Be able to lead and manage events
- Build positive relationships with all stakeholders
- Be aware of current initiatives in the UK music education system
- Be willing and able to support Surrey Arts’ work throughout the stated areas and outside of normal working hours.
