Project Officer Engagement Climate Emergency


Wokingham Borough Council is seeking to recruit a highly motivated professional with experience of working with multiple stakeholders in the public and private sector. You will have excellent communication and leadership skills to push the delivery of the Council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan and wider climate change agenda. This role will include tracking project deliverables, building and maintaining relationships with Borough-wide partners and stakeholders, including policymakers, civil society and businesses, ensuring coordination between the different teams across the council, and executing strategies, products and events.

As a member of the Climate Emergency team, you will work to build and disseminate the narrative that highlights the social and environmental benefits and economic opportunities of climate action, strengthen engagement and awareness programmes, bring together organisations and individuals to deliver behavioural change and support efforts to engage climate change champions. You will be responsible for ensuring alignment between the council’s commitments and the wider climate agenda, helping to deliver the ambition of making Wokingham Borough net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

This newly created position reports to the Climate Emergency Manager and will work closely with officers across the council.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish and develop our Borough-wide engagement strategy.
  • Strengthen and accelerate the council efforts to encourage behavioural change by supporting the design and implementation of the climate change engagement strategy for the Borough.
  • Build, track and maintain partnerships that enhance the impact of the Borough’s engagement programme.
  • Serve as a main point of contact for Wokingham Borough Council engagement projects and provide support for other teams.
  • Provide event support and help organise initiatives that engage residents, businesses and other stakeholders with the climate emergency agenda.
  • Develop and support community champions and a community network to engage with local communities.
  • Actively engage with the officers and elected members across the council to ensure priorities and actions are aligned.
  • Deliver existing projects, build business-cases for new projects, measure carbon savings, report on progress.
  • Support new grant applications for external funding from central Government and other organisations. Help officers to create opportunities for the commercialisation of new products and services that will be generated through the climate emergency agenda.
  • Represent the climate emergency team at internal and external events, acting as a key voice engaging others with our work to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Coordinate and provide input into reports, monitor timely deliverables, and provide support on the preparation of briefings and presentation materials.
  • Provide general administrative support, such as scheduling, event logistics and other responsibilities as needed.

Skills, Attributes and Experience

  • A degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, including climate change, sustainability, communications and engagement
  • Strong and demonstrable experience of project management, outreach, or related activities with a link to climate, energy, or broader environmental issues.
  • Proven ability to lead on the coordination and delivery of projects, including major events, influencing strategies, and programmes.
  • Polished and professional communication skills, experience working with diverse networks of people and maintaining good relationships.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure with tight deadlines.
  • Flexible and capable of working with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Experienced communicator with excellent written, verbal and presentation skills and an ability to interpret and communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite.
