National Citizen Service and the Role of the Youth Support Worker
National Citizen Service (NCS) is a fantastic youth opportunity for 16 and 17 year-olds. It brings together young people from diverse backgrounds, providing them with an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience and the prospect of making a real difference in the world.
Hertfordshire County Council, Services for Young People (SfYP) have delivered NCS since 2011 and we’re recruiting for seasonal NCS Youth Support Workers to help make our NCS summer 2022 the best yet. We want workers willing to help guide young people every step of the way as they take on the NCS challenge, gain new skills and make new friends.
The NCS programme for a NCS Youth Support Worker consists of two-week waves, part residential:
Week 1 – Be Epic – this week is residential with two days supporting young people as they take part in outdoor activities and then Live Life , three days helping young people develop life skills through workshops to help their well-being and promote independent living.
Week 2 – Do Good – this week is non-residential assisting young people at a venue in St Albans whilst they plan, develop and carry out a community-based project that focuses on making a difference to the area and local charities. As this week is non-residential workers need to be able to independently travel to the relevant base location.
To be considered for this role you must be available to work Monday to Friday for the full two weeks of the programme and there is the opportunity to work both waves consecutively. NCS Summer 2022 consists of the following two waves:-
Wave 1 - Monday 11th July to Friday 22nd July (2 weeks)
Wave 2 – Monday 25th July to Friday 5th August (2 weeks)
What are we looking for?
We are looking for highly motivated and energetic individuals with experience of working with young people and who feel confident guiding small groups in activities. ; Youth Support Workers need to be able to use their own initiative to get tasks done (particularly at the end of a long residential day) and strive at all times to be a positive role-model.
