“Working to prevent youth offending and to enhance community safety”


North Somerset Youth Offending Service (YOS) is a well-established partnership between North Somerset Council, Police, Probation, Clinical Commissioning Group, Public Health, Office of Police and Crime Commissioner and other agencies.

The YOS works with young people subject to statutory youth justice interventions and those at risk of offending on a diversionary and preventative basis; and provides services to carers, families and victims.


Junction 21 Mentoring and Advocacy is part of the YOS diversionary and preventative services. Junction 21 recruits, trains and supervises volunteer mentors who support young people who are at risk of offending, anti-social behaviour or placed in local authority care. Junction 21 also delivers Advocacy support to young people in care, care leavers and young people going through the child protection process. They also provide return home from missing interviews for children in care.


The post-holder will be required to undertake a range of duties.  The principal tasks will be to support the project coordinator in deliver training and supervision to the volunteer mentors and advocates, assess new referrals, match mentors with mentees and review existing relationships/interventions. The applicant will also be expected to deliver advocacy interventions themselves


You will need:

  • Five GCSE passes or equivalent
  • Degree level qualification or equivalent.
  • In depth experience of direct work with young people who are vulnerable and whose behaviour can be challenging or anti-social
  • Experience of direct work with young people in the care system
  • Previous experience of working as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of training and supervising volunteers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including ability to challenge people appropriately.
  • Experience of delivering advocacy to young people would be an advantage


Due to the nature of the work undertaken in this role the postholder must be able to work some evenings and weekends.


Due to the nature of the work undertaken in this role the postholder must also have the ability to travel and carry passengers throughout the geographical area of North Somerset.  A suitable vehicle is therefore an essential requirement.


This post is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
