Service Lead – Environmental Health

We have an opportunity for the greatest challenge, and potentially the most rewarding part of your career.  If you are a skilled and inspirational leader, and you’re looking for greater scope to make a tangible positive difference in the community, we have the opportunity for you. As our Service Lead for Environmental Health, you’ll enjoy a wide-ranging assistant director level role that offers traditional environmental health activities plus an extra challenge: combating climate change. Heading up our bold carbon reduction plans as well as a large Environmental Health (EH) department, your work will impact all of East Devon – and far beyond.

As part of our Strategic Management team, you’ll have the freedom you need to make a positive difference to our environment and the lives of residents. This key leadership role will see you improving standards of private sector housing; enhancing Health & Safety (at work and in communities); and managing a busy Environmental Health department. With your guidance, the team will give customers outstanding service and carry out a range of regulatory controls. In addition, you’ll be tackling key Public Health projects to support wellbeing and mental health, contributing towards tackling poverty, and you will be shaping the future delivery of organisational risk management around emergency planning and corporate health & safety

Where it really gets exciting is our Climate Change Strategy. We aim to be carbon neutral by 2040 – and you’ll play a key role in making that happen.  By driving and embedding our current five-year action plan, you’ll help homes, businesses, travel, visitors and communities to support a low carbon district. Our plans are ambitious – but you’ll be determined to make them happen with a ‘can do’ attitude, passion for your work, and track record of success in project and people management.

A qualified and degree-educated (or equivalent) EH professional, you’ll have a track record of managing successful Environmental Health services. Environmental protection & commercial licensing, private sector housing, health & safety; emergency planning & business continuity, community safety; and public health and wellbeing – you have broad experience and knowledge of relevant legislation, good practice and policy. Collaborative and resilient, you inspire partners and teams alike, managing performance, people and projects with calm confidence. We are seeking someone with drive, energy and organisation, you approach multiple tasks with ease and enthusiasm, overcoming barriers and addressing challenges as they arise.

Join us and you’ll enjoy an EH management role with an exciting extra dimension – but that’s not all. You will be part of a Platinum Investors in People (IiP) organisation which works together with local people to create great value services and an outstanding community, economy and environment in which people want to live, work, visit and enjoy now, and for future generations.  And with our wide range of health and wellbeing benefits, our highly flexible/hybrid Worksmart working arrangements and our commitment to continuous learning and development, you can be confident of joining a dedicated community.
