Prison Librarian

HMP The Mount, Bovingdon

You don’t need a background in libraries to make a difference in one

HMP The Mount Prison library is more than a collection of books. For many prisoners, it’s a lifeline: a vital gateway to learning, information and support. Here, Hertfordshire Libraries plays an important role, helping people in prison to maintain contact with life outside, prepare themselves for re-joining the community, and reduce their risk of reoffending.

We’re looking for a new Prison Librarian for our library in HMP The Mount to develop and promote the service to all prisoners across the establishment. As well as managing a small team of library staff, orderlies and volunteers, you’ll work directly with the prisoners, Prison Service staff and Prison Education Service providers. It’s a hugely varied role that will see you helping prisoners catch-up on the education that they may have missed out on, helping them to learn new skills and even helping them to read and record bedtime stories for their children back home. You will also support prisoners in acquiring basic literacy and numeracy, and will facilitate access to distance learning courses.

Resilience is important in this challenging environment, and your success will depend more on life experience than formal experience. You will be comfortable working within a secure, rules-based environment. Although a background in libraries is welcome, you could equally be a military veteran, a former police officer or a former prison officer. Any public-facing role that has taught you how to act with integrity and deal with difficult situations is a good starting point. Our comprehensive training will provide the rest.

We look for people who are proactive, great communicators and team players. You’ll also be well-organised with some IT skills. This could be a first step to a long-term career in libraries or a late-career role that allows you to work more locally and give something back.
