Rough Sleeper Outreach Officer – fixed-term contract 24 months (Ref. No: RS)
Salary £32,631.04 p.a.
The Rough Sleeper Outreach Officer provides an opportunity to take a lead role in the No First Night Out initiative. This project aims to eradicate the number of people rough sleeping in the Borough of Broxbourne. The post involves working directly with clients at risk of rough sleeping, or who are already, with a particular focus upon helping clients. The project’s objective is to end the homelessness and to provide an offer of independent housing, with wrap-around support from appropriate service providers to sustain the tenancy.
It is an exciting and varied role, which is part of a multi-agency effort, liaising with the local authority, police and other agencies. You will respond directly to reports of rough sleepers and maintain an accurate overview of the local picture in the Borough of Broxbourne.
You should enjoy working with people as the role entails liaison and relationship building with single homeless people and relevant support services. You will also need to be genuinely committed to helping people facing difficulties in their lives with an empathetic approach. Experience working with vulnerable or disadvantaged people would be an advantage, although enthusiasm and commitment are as important.
The role requires confidence to approach clients rough sleeping in the community. You need excellent communication skills and the ability to work using your own initiative, albeit with support and supervision. It is a busy working environment so the ability to work effectively under pressure and as part of a team is essential. The role also involves casework and therefore good written and interviewing skills are required. An understanding of homelessness laws will be helpful, but full training will be given.
The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in fluent English is essential for this role. A driving license is essential for the role.
This role requires a Standard Disclosure and Barring Check. We are committed to safer recruitment, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
The benefits package includes generous leave entitlement, a full training and development programme, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and free membership to the Council’s local leisure centres, which includes free access to gyms, swimming pools, fitness classes, racket sport sessions, a health suite and a range of generous discounts across other leisure and culture services.
