It’s an exciting time in Reading’s Housing Needs Service.  We are currently undertaking a project to modernise our services for which we have big ambition to provide innovative and creative solutions to housing need, in the context of a customer focused and person-centred culture.

Central to this is having the right people supporting the delivery of our ambitious and award-winning services. We are looking to strengthen our team with several key new roles which we need to support the service to drive transformational change.

The Housing Needs Service sits within the Housing and Communities Team, where we are all passionate about the people who live in our town. Our broader vision is for everyone to have the opportunity to live in a good quality sustainable home within in a lively and thriving neighbourhood.

About the role

This exciting role is key to ensuring that Reading is innovative, solution focused, and customer centred in our approach to tackling housing need. It is intended that you to bring a fresh approach to how we prevent homelessness, working closely with a range of teams to bring your vision into action.

Reading is a vibrant town with a strong economy, however access to affordable housing remains a challenge for many residents. You will work with a range of teams to explore opportunities to tackle housing need and use your expertise to support the development of housing in Reading into the future.  

You will be responsible for the leadership, management and performance of the Homelessness Prevention Team, the Housing Needs Access Team and the Voids and Lettings team, leading on the strategic planning and operational delivery of the services, providing a vital management link between the development of Housing policy and operational delivery.

Your leadership will ensure that individual’s housing needs are assessed in line with the requirements of relevant parts of the Housing Act, responsibility for the Local Authority’s delivery of the Allocations Scheme and responsibilities delivered by Homelessness Prevention Teams.

About you

You will be pivotal in the delivery of services to customers in housing need. We’re looking for people with inquisitive mindsets who like to problem solve using a firm base of Housing experience. You will bring your own ideas to support positive change and be passionate about delivering quality services to those most in need.

Using your strong management background and experience in the sector you will be instrumental in supporting front line managers to deliver their services in a robust, safe and customer focused way, focusing on motivation, resilience and opportunity for those that you work with.  

You’ll be dealing with colleagues from across the organisation so strong communications skills and a collaborative mindset will really help you to make an impact.

The following experience will help you deliver this role effectively:

  • Evidence of continuous professional development, with a relevant management qualification or able to demonstrate relevant and substantial management experience
  • A detailed knowledge of legislative and regulatory framework relating to housing need, for example homelessness, allocations, landlord and tenant, family and asylum
  • Preparation and presentation of clear and precise reports for a variety of purposes relevant to a political environment
  • Multi-agency or joint working, including managing projects with a range of stakeholders
  • Analysing complex information to draw conclusions for change or service development
