Trainee Accountant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a graduate (or part qualified CCAB/AAT level 4) to work in a hybrid role at Crawley Borough Council within our Finance team. 

Formal work experience in the industry, while advantageous, is not essential as this role is suitable for a recent graduate (with a degree in a relevant field) or a part qualified individual. 

This role will give you the opportunity to kickstart your career within public finance by gaining a wide variety of on-the-job experience, whilst also progressing towards chartered accountant status through the Accountancy and Taxation Professional Level 7 Apprenticeship routeOpens in new window. The apprenticeship scheme will include a study time allowance of 20% (one day per week) including on the job training as well as professional study. 

Reporting to the Senior Finance Business Partner and working directly in a team of eight, as well as the wider corporate finance team, the successful candidate will be a vital part of a team that delivers specialist advice and effective challenge to its stakeholders, including budget managers and elected Members.

Ideally, we are looking for applicants who are:

  • Willing to learn and determined to succeed both academically and professionally
  • Computer literate – have a good standard of Microsoft Excel spreadsheet skills and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • A good team player who can work collaboratively with colleagues from across the council

The aim of the trainee role is to enable the successful candidate to gain the relevant qualification and skills to progress to the next step of their public finance career. To enable this, variety of work experience is a key priority of the role and will include involvement in budget management, system reconciliations, preparation of statement of accounts, treasury management and other ad-hoc projects where possible. 

The council currently operate a hybrid working model with a minimum requirement of two days a week in in the office, with staff able to work the rest of the week from home. We will also shortly be moving into our new town hall which boasts a modern, high specification workspace. 

The role comes with full study support through the apprenticeship scheme. All study and examination expenses will be met by the council. 

You must have the right to live and work in England. As this is a government funded apprenticeship you must have lived in the UK or European Economic Area (EEA) for the last three consecutive years. You must not be currently enrolled on another apprenticeship or further/higher education programme and do not already hold a qualification at level 7 or above in accountancy or a closely related subject.
