Great Yarmouth Borough Council
Legal and Governance
Democratic Services Officer (001553)
If you are the kind of person who approaches everything they do with energy and purpose, who is conscientious in their work and has a passion for democracy and governance then we are looking for you.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council is an ambitious local authority with big plans for the future and massive opportunities ahead. With one of the most successful enterprise zones in the country, Great Yarmouth is England’s offshore energy hub and Norfolk’s biggest seaside resort at the edge of the Broads National Park.
An exciting opportunity has arisen within Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Legal and Governance Service and we are looking for highly motivated and proactive Democratic Services Officers to join a small dynamic team.
Democratic Services Officers are primarily responsible for providing support services to Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s democratic decision-making process, supporting our elected members and various committees. These roles also support the processing of all Freedom of Information requests received by the Council; including logging, reviewing and referring requests, collecting information, and collating final responses for review, working together with our Information Governance officers and legal advisers as required.
The ideal candidates will possess excellent written and verbal communications skills. They will be organised, accurate, able to work under pressure to predetermined deadlines and have a sound understanding of local government.
Experience of working in a democratic or information governance role in a local authority or a similar organisation would be extremely beneficial, but it is not essential, although minute taking experience is an essential part of this role.
Candidates must possess excellent IT skills, be proficient in the use of ICT systems (experience of using CMIS, the Council’s Committee Management System would be an advantage) and have a willingness to meet challenges with enthusiasm and confidence.
Although the hours are 37 per week, the working hours are not always 9 to 5 the successful postholders will be required to attend regular evening meetings therefore the post holders must be available to work "out of the normal office hours" during the week as dictated by the requirements of the service.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a professional and committed team and we look forward to receiving your application
