The Organisation

Special Educational Needs Disability Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) Newham, is a statutory service designed to support children, young people (0-25) and their parent/carers, with issues relating to their Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) provision.  The support offered is free, impartial and confidential.  SENDIASS will not share parent/carers children or young people information with other professionals unless we have consent or there is a safeguarding issue.

The Job

The Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) Caseworker.

SENDIASS offers impartial, support and advice to parents of children with special educational needs. 

The case worker will be part of a small but busy team that supports parent/carers, children and young people, who request help with the processes involved in a variety of issues to do with education. It is a demanding role that requires the applicant to be able to work with sensitive information, have outstanding interpersonal skills and work well under pressure. 

You will be required to have experience in working either in a school, educational or advice giving setting and have a demonstrable understanding of the law pertaining to all aspects of educational legislation and to Special Educational Needs in particular. 

It is essential that you can work as part of a team as well as independently. You will have superb communication skills, be confident in speaking to large groups of people and be happy to travel all over the Borough. 

You will need to have a degree of flexibility as you may be required to support families some early morning and evening meetings. You will have competent I.T skills as the service uses its own database to hold and update cases.

The post holder must have an understanding of GDPR and the ability to handle confidential information with appropriate discretion. This post is an opportunity for someone to demonstrate their excellent listening and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate, effectively, verbally and in writing with families and professionals. Therefore, supporting the service caseworkers in delivering a, consistently, high level of service to all service users.
