Within the Streetscene Unit, the Area Team delivers a wide range of regulatory services that improve the quality of life for local residents. The Streetscene Officer uses a range of tools and powers, including statutory enforcement and prevention work, to address environmental issues in the borough and is responsible for designing and leading educational projects and for managing the performance of the Council’s waste and cleansing contractor.
The job involves using innovative solutions across a wide-range of complex and legislative environmental issues. This includes responding to customer complaints, investigations and inspections, licensing, environmental permitting, fixed penalty notice patrols and abandoned vehicles. You will be required to take a lead role when working on local and national initiatives and forge links with partner agencies such as Police, Environment Agency and the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
To apply you must have experience of working in public health, waste management or environmental protection and of both formal and informal enforcement procedures including preparing case files and attending court. You must also have experience of issuing fixed penalty notices and conducting PACE interviews. An understanding of the Clean Neighborhoods and Environment Act 2005 and the Environmental Protection Act 1990 is also required.
To deal with the significant daily challenges and high volume enquiries you will need to be able to work flexibly, communicate clearly, work efficiently and effectively in a team environment and be committed to high standards of customer care.
The Council takes a proactive stance in addressing environmental crime and has a proven track record that has resulted in the authority being recognised as the 2nd most successful nationally for addressing fly-tipping.
