At Epsom & Ewell, we aspire to deliver high quality services to our residents. We might be small, but we have big plans to serve our population of 80,000 residents. We are investing in our future, increasing strategic capacity, and exploring new ways of working.

The Council has undergone a review of its structure bring together a range of related disciplines under one Place Making service, including Economic Development, Climate Change, Planning and Countryside services. We are investing in our future, increasing strategic capacity, and exploring new ways of working.

The Council is looking for an experienced and dedicated Conservation Officer, to be based within the Development Management Team, and reporting to the Planning Development and Enforcement Manager.  You will act as the Council’s principal advisor on heritage matters and assess and comment upon heritage-related planning applications.

Working closely with other colleagues, you will be responsible for advising Members, developers and residents on issues relating to conservation and design, give heritage-related planning advice to potential applicants and agents at pre-application stage, and assist with the implementation of corporate projects which require specialist advice.

This is a great opportunity for a member of the IHBC with a degree or equivalent qualification in town planning, conservation, design or an architectural discipline.

You will have a good understanding of the planning process and proven experience of having provided recommendations to planners and worked on heritage issues previously.

You must also have a proven track record of managing projects and be skilled with report writing.  You must be able to manage your own workload, working successfully to tight deadlines, and with minimum supervision.  Excellent communication skills are essential as you will be interacting with Members, the general public, external agencies and public bodies, together with an ability to work effectively as part of a busy and committed team.  You must also be able to exhibit proven negotiation skills, have a flexible approach to work and cope with the work demands in a methodical and a calm manner.

If you have enthusiasm and determination to deliver a first class service then we would like to hear from you.

In return, we offer excellent office accommodation five minutes’ walk from Epsom railway station, heavily subsidised parking if needed, an attractive salary. You will work with a brilliant team of strong and committed colleagues, benefit from 24 days annual leave (rising to 29 after 5 years’ service), subsidised gym membership, payment of professional fees, entitlement to join the local government pension scheme, and non-contributory life assurance.
