This is an exciting opportunity for someone with significant post qualification experience in planning development management to play an important role in the delivery of a first class, customer orientated planning service.

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council is going through change, and this is an exciting time to join the planning team. We have a new Head of Planning, and Planning Policy Manager and are at the early stages of developing our new Local Plan which will go out to consultation in the autumn of this year.  We have also appointed a new Development Manager and have gone through a restructure of the Planning Service which has seen the creation of a new Major Projects team. This post will report directly to the newly appointed Major Projects Team Leader who reports to the Head of Planning.  The new Major Projects team will have a focus on delivering major development in the borough in accordance with agreed Planning Performance Agreements and will also be responsible for advising and progressing corporate projects to meet the aims of the Corporate Strategy.  The Major Projects Principal Planning Officer post is key to delivering the change we have gone through and to assist in balancing growth and constraint in a borough which comprises 70% Green Belt and almost 27% AONB with a diverse range of towns, villages and countryside.

The role will be key in seeking to ensure the Council’s objectives of sustainable growth whilst protecting its natural and historic assets are achieved. With exciting opportunities for major improvement opportunities within Tonbridge town centre and ambitious projects being developed by the Council and other growth initiatives, our Borough is really transforming at pace.

In support of our plans to deliver a highly performing service with performance management and customer service at its heart, we are looking to the post holder to play a vital role in shaping how the Council achieves its priorities, adding value to the team and a range of key projects. The role requires someone who has experience of dealing with large scale major applications where schemes are progressed in line with agreed project timescales working in a highly performing team with the skills to guide development to successful outcomes.

In return, working for Tonbridge and Malling Council you’ll have easy access from London by train and have all that Kent can offer set in stunning countryside. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your skills and experience within an organisation that prides itself on supporting its staff. We encourage staff to undertake vocational and technical training. In addition to learning & development, we also offer many flexible working opportunities, including job share, flexi time, compressed hours and of course home working.

You will support the Major Projects Team Leader and deputise for this role as and when required and will assist in developing and mentoring more junior member in the team to reach their potential. You will need to be a member of the MRTPI with a proven track record for delivering major applications to agreed PPA timescales and have excellent communications skills.
