About Us

Central Bedfordshire is an ambitious authority, determined to be an exemplary one. Our strategic location and high quality of life mean we are one of the fastest growing areas in the country.

As a council we face the same challenges every business does - investing in the right places and delivering great results. Except for us, it’s all about our 289,000 residents. We’re totally focussed on helping to improve their lives and making Central Bedfordshire a great place to live and work.

This is a great time to join us on our journey.

About the role:

Here in Environmental Services, we’re committed to ensuring Central Bedfordshire is a great place to live, work and visit. We do this by managing several large-scale, high cost public-facing services that enhance our area and deliver statutory obligations. This includes; waste collection, waste disposal, four Household Waste Recycling Centres, street cleansing, fly-tipping and grounds maintenance. You’ll find your greatness as you play an integral role in delivering these services as part of a proactive team.

As part of this small team, you will be key to assisting the delivery of quality and cost effectiveness of a range of high value, high profile, contracted out services. As a Team Leader you will be responsible for managing, supporting and developing a small team of Technical Officers, providing the team with regular one-to-one meetings to include performance management, staff welfare and Continuous Professional Development. You will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of your team in addition to personally carrying out many of the tasks of a Technical Officer yourself, at a reduced level, to effectively deliver Environmental Services administration and manage our customer contact.

The role includes acting as an escalation point to investigate/resolve complaints across all areas of activity. You will therefore need to demonstrate good communication and leadership qualities; and use good judgement and initiative to find solutions. You will provide management support for the department, identify and recommend service improvement opportunities, best practice initiatives, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental and waste management legislation. You will be responsible for creating productive working relationships within the Council, its contractors, other Service Areas and delivering improvements in environmental behaviour and customer satisfaction.

Educated to a good standard and/or with experience in a similar role, you’ll be experienced in dealing with a wide range of customers or colleagues using a professional, knowledgeable, and proactive approach and have the ability to lead and support a team. You will have a high level of literacy and numeracy with the ability to process data accurately, coupled with a calm and patient approach to dealing with customers, suppliers, and contractors.

Join us, and you’ll get the chance to gain insight and knowledge in environmental based services and contract management whilst working with other team members. You’ll also find your own greatness as you support the effective delivery of waste and environmental services.

What we can offer you

As well as joining a friendly, dedicated, and hardworking team you will have access to numerous benefits, including:

  • Hybrid working arrangements as appropriate. We recognise the importance of supporting our employees to balance their home and work life and to be able to work in the most efficient way. As a hybrid worker you will be able to work from home with access to any CBC location.
  • A £250 one off hybrid worker payment, helping you achieve a safe and suitable work space at home
  • Support to work from abroad for up to a month a year where appropriate
  • Generous family friendly policies and practices
  • A supportive and inclusive environment that values and celebrates differences
