The Junior Press Officer will support the day-to-day operation of the Press Office. This role involves both reactive and proactive media responsibilities, and will help promote the services, decisions, policies and priorities of the council in the media and on social media.
The Medway Press Office is managed between 8.30am and 5pm weekdays and provides an out-of-hours emergency media service. This role will also participate in the out-of-hours media rota for Medway Council.
This role will also occasionally help cover Medway Full Council meetings which are held in the evening.
The Junior Press Officer will help ensure the council’s brand values and tone of voice speak across all our press office and digital communications activities.
Under the direction of the Senior Media Manager, the Junior Press Officer will assist with answering media enquiries, writing press releases, publishing press releases to the website, preparing media briefings for interviews and researching media matters.
They will also use a variety of social media channels and digital communications methods, including video interviews, to communicate and engage with our target audiences. They will work with the Senior Media Manager to programme the council’s social media news flow, monitoring and reporting back on performance and making recommendations for improvement.
They will also monitor and co-ordinate responses to social media comments not covered by our customer services team, as well as provide support to our customer services team who use social media.
They will also contribute content to the council’s quarterly Medway Matters magazine, where required.
Qualification in journalism or public relations (e.g. NCTJ qualifications, related degree or suitable alternative).
