We are seeking an energetic and skilled general maintenance operative to work in our busy and friendly team.

You will assist with and work alone on a variety of work including construction and maintenance work to the general street scene on both public and private land, as well as highways, to ensure Winchester District is safe and well presented. Your work will also include general grounds maintenance, safety inspections, basic maintenance to sewage treatment works and the maintenance of rivers. Practical support for high profile events, responding to emergencies and acting as a front line responder in severe weather events are also requirements of the role.

Due to the versatile nature of the team you could be asked to do a wide variety of work, from maintaining a playground, erecting a tourist information sign, cutting grass, to helping run a public event by closing roads, and that variety of work makes it a very interesting and enjoyable role. You will have a good working knowledge of plant and equipment and have experience of working in a general maintenance environment. Additional experience that would be beneficial to your application would be general maintenance experience, experience of maintaining sewage treatment plants, experience of working on the highway, or working for a local authority, however these are not essential and appropriate training will be given to the right applicant. The most important qualifications are having a positive attitude to your work, being flexible, and having excellent team working skills, these three things are essential to succeed in this role.

Please note that you may be on the rota for the Council’s out of hours standby service if operationally required, there will be some out of hours work to assist with events or an emergency weather response.
