Test Valley Borough Council’s IT service provides essential Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services on behalf of our staff, residents and local communities across Test Valley and Winchester.

We have an opportunity within our GIS team for someone to help us deliver a successful GIS service to Winchester City Council and Test Valley Borough Council.

The Team

Our GIS team sits within our IT service which is made up of professional, friendly, and supportive colleagues, from apprentices, a couple of new starters to some who have been here for years!

As well as working within the IT service, you’ll interact a lot with colleagues across both authorities, including senior staff and councillors.

What you’ll be doing

Your work will involve providing technical support and development for the council’s GIS system (ESRI). This support will include the creation of user templates, the in-house training of users, provision of user support and creation of training documentation for use across both councils.

A couple of examples of our recent tasks include producing parish profile maps for Winchester parishes, helping to produce walking routes in Test Valley and identifying solar power planning applications received by Winchester’s Planning team.

You’ll also be providing support to colleagues who work on the systems we use (ESRI ArcGIS) and our case management system (IDOX Uniform) assisting with any incidents or requests logged via our service desk.

Salary and experience

Not GIS qualified? No problem! You’ll start with us at grade 5 and develop your technical skills with our brilliant team who will teach you everything you need to learn GIS and develop your skills further.

At grade 6, you will have experience of working in a GIS Support environment and a good understanding of GIS based systems (for example ESRI and IDOX).

To thrive in the role, you need to have good organisational skills, a good attention to detail and be able to communicate effectively. You should also be interested in learning and developing your GIS knowledge and experience – we’re constantly developing our GIS skills here!

Working flexibly

This post can be worked full time for 37 hours a week or part-time between 30-37 hours per week and is based out of our Winchester and Andover offices.

We support our staff to optimise their time and balance work with supporting their well-being and other aspects of their lives.

Your time can be split between our offices each week, or you can work from home or another suitable location when you’re not needed in the office.  We’ll provide you with all necessary equipment to work in an agile way.

We offer a range of benefits and working arrangements to support employees here at the council including discounted gym membership, a generous holiday allowance that grows with your experience and length of service, cycle to work schemes and free parking whilst at work.
