About us
Newham will offer you a unique working environment within a London borough that is at the centre of many of Europe’s most exciting regeneration projects - including the Royal Docks (the new location for the Mayor of London’s City Hall) and Stratford (where the LLDC’s planning powers will shortly be returning to the borough).
Over the last two years, the Council has adopted a number of key corporate strategies – these include a declaration of climate emergency, underpinned by the objective to make the London Borough of Newham carbon neutral by 2030 and carbon zero by 2045 and Community Wealth Building: an inclusive economic approach that aims to address poverty in the borough as well as ensuring that investment coming into Newham benefits all residents.
Alongside these corporate priorities, the Planning Service is involved in the delivery of c.2800 new homes targeted per year, 31 Strategic Sites, an Enterprise Zone, large scale and distinctive employment-generating schemes, and major infrastructure projects underway. The policy team has just produced a Regulation 18 Local Plan for consultation – starting the process of shaping the borough for the next 15 years.
Newham’s Highways and Transport Service is involved in an ambitious and transformative process to deliver Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, improved cycling and walking infrastructure and a network of electric charging stations and car clubs, across the borough.
Newham offers many career-defining opportunities to work at pace, at scale, and on innovative responses to complex issues. We are evolving in how we deliver services to our residents and businesses, with investment in new ICT to enable our staff to work remotely and be closer to the communities we serve.
Newham has a flexible working policy and we are open to considering proposals as to the exact pattern of work, such that hours can be arranged around you and your family's needs, as well as our service needs. This job is available on a full time or part time basis. We are open to applications from anyone who is able to work 3 days or 21.6 hours a week or more.
About the Job
In keeping with the Council’s declaration of climate emergency, this post will be instrumental in delivering sustainable transport objectives in new developments across the borough.
This role is based in the Planning Policy Team, working alongside another Principal Transport Planner and the Sustainable Transport Obligations Coordinator and with the Highways and Sustainable Transport Teams to ensure the design and delivery of sustainable transport interventions within new developments. This will include advising on development proposals during the pre-application and application processes, assessing Travel Plans and Construction Logistics Plans and ensuring that the demolition, construction and operation of new developments supports and delivers the Council’s transport and highways objectives.
The role will also be required to provide support on wider transport matters including advising on issues on a sub-regional and regional level, developing appropriate local guidance and contributing their expertise to the refresh of the Local Plan and future supporting documents.
