Trading Standards Officer (2 posts)

£36,298 - £39,493 + benefits

Wirral is home to vibrant, energetic and engaged communities, people who take real ownership of their local area and are passionate about making Wirral a better place. The council and its partners have pledged to #BeTheDifference

We’ve got ambitious targets to meet by 2025. We are an employer who supports, who is flexible but who demands the very best. To achieve everything we have promised to our residents, we need people who are driven and ready to deliver the very best for our communities.

Are you an experienced or aspiring Trading Standards Officer?

Would you like a role so varied, that no two days are the same?

Then we have a great opportunity for you!

We’re looking for a Trading Standards Officer who will be required to carry out the full range of statutory trading standards enforcement duties, depending on qualifications and competency. This includes metrology, food standards, intellectual property, fair trading law, consumer product safety, credit, feeding stuffs and fertilisers, doorstep crime and underage sales. Part of this will involve working in partnership with multi-agency organisations such as the police, border force and HMRC.

You will work within a generic team carrying out inspections, projects, and investigations into complex and serious breaches of trading standards legislation. You will identify legal contraventions and select, recommend and execute appropriate enforcement activity based on assessed risk. You will have sole responsibility for undertaking this work and the duties will include presenting solutions to bring a resolution to complex issues.

You will be required to comply with the training, qualifications and competence requirements and you must hold one of the following qualifications:

Professional CTSI qualification Diploma in Trading Standards (DTS) or Diploma in Consumer Affairs and Trading Standards (DCATS) (70 points) or equivalent. Legal Metrology and Food Standards modules are essential for this role.

If you are not fully qualified and only part way through your qualification, we would be happy to support you in this.

At Wirral, we believe in ensuring staff are well looked after, staff wellbeing is a priority for us. We’re serious about recognising and rewarding people for the great things they do. You’ll benefit from our track record of developing, growing and investing in our people. We’ll quickly get to know how we can encourage and help you to learn in the flow of work and benefit from our collaborative learning culture and support for continuous professional development. We have a range of staff benefits including staff discounts, an excellent pension scheme which inlcudes a generous employer contribution rate, immediate life cover and ill-health protection. We have a strong flexible working approach, hybrid working, family-friendly employment initiatives and an annual leave package starting with 28 days leave plus public holidays.

This post is subject to Enhanced Child Level DBS check.

Should you wish to have an informal discussion about the role, please contact Gill Vicary on 0151 691 8377 or 07796 696 189 or email gillvicary@wirral.gov.uk

Do you want to #BeTheDifference? Then we’d love to hear from you!
