Political Assistant to the Surrey Opposition Forum


£34,688 per annum hour for 36 hours per week based at County Hall, KT1 2DN. This position is based inside one of our main area offices, click HERE to see a 360 degree view of the building and surrounding area along with a view of the reception. We are looking to relocate back into the county by 2020.

In line with legislation, this will be a fixed term contract until May 2021 when the next County Council elections are held.

About the role

We are looking for someone to provide political and administrative support to the Surrey Opposition Forum and its Leader. The Forum is a political Group in Surrey County Council, with 9 Liberal Democrat Councillors and one Green Party Councillor.

You will support the Group in managing and co-ordinating its business, including administrative support and advice to Group meetings. This would include:

  • Ensuring that Group members are fully and promptly briefed
  • Keeping abreast of national developments affecting local government, including new legislation and national party policies
  • Drafting press releases, undertaking research, preparing briefings
  • Providing an independent source of advice and support to ensure effective communications.

You must have a keen interest in the key issues facing local government today and a sound grasp of the Liberal Democrat and Green Parties' policies. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong IT skills and a flexible approach to pressures and problems, will be vital to this role.

You should also have experience of previous political activity and ideally be a member of the Liberal Democrat Party or the Green Party. Applications will, however, also be accepted from candidates with no political affiliation.
