Maidstone is engaged in an unprecedented scale of investment and intervention to support the growth of the local economy. We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic person to refill the post of Economic Development Officer. The successful candidate will play a major role in delivering this exciting agenda focused around the Council’s Economic Development Strategy which includes the management and promotion of the Business Terrace, its expansion, securing its long term future, along with the Borough wide business support services.
You will lead on the creation of a new £10m Innovation Centre at Kent Medical Campus including its design, finance, operational contract management and delivery.
Working with Kent County Council as part of their Major Projects Team you will support the delivery of the Integrated Transport Strategy including large scale infrastructure projects.
Critically you will develop the Council’s Business Capital of Kent campaign and promote the Borough to local businesses and inward investors, attending and organising exhibitions and events and ensuring Maidstone benefits from the highest possible profile in the media and digital channels.
The post holder will need to have extensive knowledge of economic development, and experience of delivering projects to support the local economy, particularly regarding SME business support services, business centres and marketing. You will need to provide expert professional responses to planning applications regarding business expansion or the loss of business space to the support planning officers.
You will need to have a strong track record in commissioning and managing consultants, project management, and experience in managing staff and budgets and meeting challenging income targets. Experience of securing external funding for economic development projects is important. Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills, both written and verbal, are essential as a great deal of the Council’s work is with external organisations and stakeholders, businesses and other council departments.
The Council considers this to be a customer focused role and the ability to converse at ease with customers adapting communication style to suit differing audiences and provide advice in accurate spoken English is fundamental to the role.
