Service Manager

Fixed term contract until March 2022

Closing date: Sunday 14th July 2019 at 11.30pm

Do you have proven experience of managing complex services and budgets and delivering contracts in a regulated environment? Then join Shelter as Service Manager and you could soon be playing a vital role in the fight against poor housing and homelessness in the Birmingham area.

A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change — with individuals, in communities, across society – and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

The issues of poor housing and homelessness in Birmingham continue to increase and impact on those living in the city. To address this, Shelter operates an integrated Hub that provides a range of advice and support services that enable thousands of people a year to access a range of advice and support provision. And, with a team of over 70 staff and volunteers, our dedicated team is at the forefront, working in partnership to tackle poor housing and homelessness across the city. Your challenge will be to make sure the Hub effectively meets the needs of the communities it serves.

About the role

Shelter is moving into a new strategy phase, so this is a particularly exciting time to join us. This brand new role will involve working closely with the Hub Manager to provide strong, effective and empowering leadership. As well as having responsibility for particular projects and functions, we’ll rely on you to provide line management to Team Leaders and oversight and guidance to the rest of the team and deputise for the Hub Manager when required. Ensuring that service users and volunteers are a key part of all services and influential in their development, design and delivery will be important too. What's more, you’ll play a key role in our strategic engagement in the city and region and represent the service in a variety of forums, including media work.

About you
Forward thinking and flexible, you have what it takes to actively support the introduction of new ideas, methods and processes to working practices. You also have significant experience of staff & service management including casework support & supervision, are used to overseeing safeguarding and up-to-date with safeguarding best practice. A proven ability to operate at a senior level with an external audience, engaging and influencing a variety of stakeholders is important too, as is the need to be structured, calm and organised as the Hub continues to develop. And, when it comes to motivating a team or taking a solution focused approach to achieving service outcomes, again, you deliver.

Benefits

We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, pension and interest free travel loans. Our employees also have access to a tenancy deposit loan, cycle to work scheme and an employee assistance programme.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
