We are looking to recruit a highly motivated Active Travel Officer for Schools to join our My Journey Wokingham Team and help play a central role in achieving positive outcomes in the way families travel to school in Wokingham!

This is an excellent opportunity to join our determined and passionate My Journey team to help make a difference to Active and Sustainable Travel in the borough.

About the role
The role will focus primarily on working with schools in the borough. You will need to be a good communicator and well organised.

The successful candidate will have a proactive approach, be highly motivated, a good communicator and well organised, ideally with a background in working with children or schools and knowledge of behaviour change. Key responsibilities for the role include:

  • To work closely with schools in the borough, building and developing relationships with key staff and recruiting junior active travel inspectors/active travel champions/eco committees to promote active and sustainable travel to the school community.
  • Support the team to add value and contribute to our Modeshift Stars and Bikeability cycle training programmes in schools.
  • To take the lead in planning, organising and delivering a programme of activities which encourage pupils, parents and the school community to travel more actively and sustainably; this may include bike breakfasts, air quality workshops, cycle skills or bike maintenance, advice and training sessions on safer walking/scooting/cycling, presentations/assemblies, and travel awareness campaigns.
  • To assist in the assessment of travel plans from developments (including non-school sites) and to ensure travel plan commitments are delivered after completion of developments.
  • To collaboratively work with key stakeholders and internal teams in the Councils, eg climate emergency, public health to identify synergies between objectives and the most efficient use of resources.
  • To contribute to the delivery of a Council wide coordinated approach to tackling climate change, air quality and health and well-being objectives through the benefits of travel.
  • To raise awareness of the My Journey brand and campaigns, school activities and the wider benefits of sustainable travel on climate change, air quality and health and well-being.
  • To provide regular news stories and case studies for the My Journey website and wider media release.
  • To support the collection of monitoring data related to schools ensuring activities being delivered meet the project objectives and targets.
  • To be able to manage workloads, prioritise work and evaluate the effectiveness of individual projects in order to adapt our programmes to ensure maximum efficacy.
  • To support the My Journey team with day to day activities/training, including events in the wider community and possibly including weekend and evening work (e.g. assisting in events)
  • To assist the Council in delivering the relevant objectives of the Local Transport Plan and developing new objectives and targets.
