We are looking for three inspiring Pre-School Early Years Room Managers to lead high-quality teaching and learning for children aged 3-5yrs in our Early Years settings based in Cyprus. You will have expertise in leading the highest quality of education and care across the Early Years.

Defence Children Services (DCS) is a Defence delivery organisation, subordinated under Army Regional Command. Our Vision is that we Educate the Child – Support the Family – Defend the Nation. HQ DCS is UK based at Trenchard Lines, Upavon and has forward deployed staff all over the world. DCS is responsible for the education and care of children of accompanied Service and Defence entitled personnel in MOD schools and settings; provides advice and guidance in respect of education for service families in the United Kingdom and the wider world.

In Cyprus, Early Years settings and schools are located in both the Western and Eastern Sovereign Base Areas (WSBA and ESBA). In the West, provision is delivered at Episkopi Primary and Episkopi Early Years, alongside Akrotiri Primary and Akrotiri Early Years. In the East, Queen Berengaria Primary based in Dhekelia and the ESBA Early Years Setting operate across two sites—Dhekelia Garrison and a satellite at Ayios Nikolaos Station.

Job description

The Early Years Room Manager (EYRM) plays a crucial role in the operational delivery of Early Years Foundation Stage provision. The Preschool Room Manager will operate under the operational direction of the Early Years Manager and the strategic direction of the Headteacher/Assistant Headteacher. They are responsible for the safe, effective, and high-quality delivery of early years education and care within the setting.

The Early Years Room Manager will be part of the deputy designated safeguarding team (DDSL) and will provide excellent leadership of teaching and learning across the 0-5 age range. The Early Years Room Manager will lead the teaching and learning of play based classrooms and will lead and develop the curriculum across the 0-5 years with a focus on 3-5yrs.

The Early Years Room Manager will work closely with a range of stakeholders. They will support the school, the Early Years Manager, the Deputy Early Years Managers, and the Early Years setting, to ensure effective implementation of our play based Early Years curriculum.

In addition to planning and directing sessions, facilitating weekly planning meetings, assisting with INSET training days, and monitoring children’s learning journeys; the Early Years Room Manager will be expected to champion effective, quality teaching and learning, reflective practice, and will strive to build strong teams.

Person specification

Essential skills/qualifications required

  • Experience working in a demanding full-time Early Years setting/school provision. You must be currently working in an Early Years/school provision.
  • Proven understanding of implementing the EYFS curriculum
  • Experience planning and teaching EYFS, birth to pre-school children
  • Experience of managing and developing a team
  • Proven experience and understanding of safeguarding and keeping children safe in education
  • Ability to communicate effectively

This is an established MOD post within Cyprus and any Cypriot Nationals will not be eligible to apply as a UKBC (UK British Civil Servant).

Qualifications

•Level 3 Early Years Educator (or equivalent) as a minimum. You must hold this qualification at the time of application.
•GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) for those qualified after September 2014

All qualifications, licences or memberships declared must be held at point of application and if applicable be in date.

Selection process details

Your Personal Statement (maximum 750 words) should demonstrate the relevant Early Years skills and experience that detail how you meet the essential criteria as detailed in the job role and responsibilities, including examples of evidence. Please note on your application your preferred age range and experience.

Upon completion of the sift, successful candidates will be invited to virtual interview, where you will;

  • deliver a 10 minute presentation themed 'As a Pre-School Room Manager how would you ensure the children in your room have the best start in life
  • followed by experienced based questions and assessed on the following Civil Service Behaviours;

    • Working Together
  • and be asked questions and assessed on your Early Years Education and Care experience.

Candidates who meet the minimum success criteria at the first interview will be invited to complete a second stage interview. This will involve watching a video (up to 20 minutes) of an Early Years group interacting with an adult in provision. You will be asked to provide professional feedback on the session, explaining how the practice observed links to the areas of learning within the EYFS and to child development. You will also be required to evaluate the impact of the practitioner’s teaching and discuss how the learning could be further extended and developed.
