Job summary

Defence Children Services (DCS) is a Defence delivery organisation, subordinated under Army Regional Command. Our Vision is that we Educate the Child – Support the Family – Defend the Nation. HQ DCS is UK based at Trenchard Lines, Upavon and has forward deployed staff all over the world. DCS is responsible for the education and care of children of accompanied Service and Defence entitled personnel in MOD schools and settings; provides advice and guidance in respect of education for service families in the United Kingdom and the wider world

Mount Pleasant Primary School, situated at Mount Pleasant Complex in the Falkland Islands, provides education for primary children from 4 – 11 years. This is a small school and at this time there are approximately 20 children on roll. Proudly providing education for the children of UK MOD personnel on continuity tours assigned to British Forces South Atlantic Islands, the school has excellent facilities, is well resourced and moved to a purpose-built building in November 2019. Mount Pleasant School is situated in the heart of the community close to all the family housing.

We offer an exciting enhanced curriculum, enriched by the opportunities of being on the Falkland Islands, which aims to promote an enthusiasm for learning as well as developing skills and knowledge in all subjects. Job description

You will be expected to carry out the professional duties and responsibilities of a teacher as outlined in the DfE Teacher Standards.

Person specification

Candidates are required to demonstrate the following essential knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Whole class teaching experience in the primary age phase, preferably in a UK or DCS School.
  • Setting high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils.
  • Promoting good progress and outcomes by pupils.
  • Excellent knowledge of the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework.
  • Planning and teaching well-structured lessons.
  • The ability to adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils.
  • Making accurate and productive use of assessment.
  • Managing behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment.
  • Fulfilling wider professional responsibilities.
  • The successful candidate is required to hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and, where required, must have successfully completed induction.

Selection process details

Your Personal Statement (maximum 750 words) should demonstrate the relevant skills and experience that detail how you meet the essential criteria and responsibilities, including examples of evidence.

At sift your personal statement, CV and qualifications will be assessed on your knowledge, skills and experience of the essential criteria detailed in Personal Specification section.

At interview you will assessed on the Teaching Standards and Civil Service behaviours and deliver a PowerPoint presentation task. The Civil Service behaviours are; Changing and Improving and Working Together.

The presentation task will be a progress case study to demonstrate how your teaching will ensure that all children flourish and achieve at Mount Pleasant School, Falkland Islands. The presentation should be no more than 20 minutes in length, with approximately 10 minutes afterwards for related questions from the interview panel.
