Job summary
The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, with responsibility for an annual budget of over £10bn, the Army is a major part of the Ministry of Defence and one of its largest operating centres who employ around 12,000 Civil Servants located at over 300 locations supporting the 110K regular and reserve soldiers across the Army. The Army Foundation College trains all Junior Soldiers (JS) under the age of 18 and prepares them for their subsequent Phase 2 Training, an exciting and challenging course programme, which includes military skills, education, adventure training and life skills. We employ a large work force comprising military staff, civil servants, and contractors, all working together to create an exciting and diverse work environment.

Job description
The Army Foundation College is seeking an enthusiastic, highly organised and proactive Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) /Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) Administrative Assistant to support the College’s vital welfare, safeguarding and Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) provision. This is a key role within a busy, high‑profile environment, providing essential administrative coordination for both the DSL and SENCO. You will help ensure statutory safeguarding obligations are met and that effective, timely support is delivered to both Permanent Staff and Junior Soldiers.Main role responsibilities:- Ensure that the Army Foundation College complies with statutory Government and Defence regulations for safeguarding and Specific Learning Differences.
- Track safeguarding allegations at the Army Foundation College, referring all cases of any JS to the relevant authority, ensuring that a response is received, recorded and actions tracked.
- Provide oversight on local authority referrals via tracking incoming and outgoing local authority referrals.
- Deliver assurance and responsibility as CPOMS lead reporting to the DSL/SENCo
- Supporting the SENCo to triage, screen and provide interventions for JS with specific learning differences in a timely manner.
- Support the SENCo/DSL in collecting data in order to analyse Army Foundation College trends in safeguarding, Js backgrounds and Specific Learning Difficulties.
- Attend meetings as directed by the SENCo/DSL to note take & carry forward actions in their absence.

Essential Skills Required:- Able to communicate clearly, sensitively, and professionally with staff, Junior Soldiers, and external agencies, especially when dealing with safeguarding matters.
- Accurate recording, tracking, and managing safeguarding and SEN information requires a high level of precision and careful data handling.
- Managing highly confidential safeguarding and personal data, it is essential to act with discretion, professionalism, and sound ethical judgement at all times.
- Work efficiently in a fast‑paced environment, with multiple priorities, referrals, and administrative responsibilities, you need to manage your workload effectively
- Positive team approach working closely with the DSL, SENCo, permanent staff, and external professionals requires collaboration, cooperation
- Safeguarding needs and priorities can change quickly, so the ability to adjust and respond flexibly is essential.
Desirable Skills:
- Previous Designated Safeguard Lead experience Highly Desirable
- Previous Specific Learning Differences experience Highly Desirable
- Awareness of mental health issues
- Awareness of Local Authority Designated Officer & Referral process
Qualifications
NVQ Advice and Guidance Support, or equivalent NVQ 3Advanced care of Trainees
GCSE English and Maths at Level 4 (or equivalent)
