Are you passionate about museums, learning and engaging people with the stories behind our collections? Do you enjoy working with people of all ages, creating engaging learning experiences and helping communities connect with their local heritage?

We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised and creative Assistant Learning Officer to join our Museum’s collection and learning team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery and development of high-quality museum learning and outreach services, helping to make our collections accessible, engaging and meaningful to a wide range of audiences.

We seek the best talent from the widest pool of people as diversity and inclusion is the key to our success. Reading Borough Council is a Disability Confident Employer and is committed to the recruitment and continued employment of people with disabilities.

About The Role:
As an Assistant Learning Officer, you will support the day-to-day delivery of the Museum's learning services, helping to provide high-quality educational experiences for schools, community groups and visitors.

You'll work closely with colleagues, volunteers and casual staff to ensure our learning programme continues to thrive.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the learning team’s day-to-day operation including learning sessions, tours, activities, loan boxes and memory boxes.
  • Assisting with customer enquiries and bookings using computerised booking systems.
  • Helping collect and record performance data, statistics and service evaluations.
  • Assisting with the recruitment, coordination and supervision of volunteers.
  • Supporting schools and teachers in accessing and using museum learning resources.
  • Contributing to the development of new learning opportunities and widening access to our collections.
  • Supporting marketing and promotion through social media, digital learning platforms and the Museum blog.
  • Assisting with budgeting, income monitoring and administrative processes.
  • Supporting events, outreach activities and partnership opportunities across the community.

About You:
We're looking for someone who is passionate about learning, heritage and community engagement and who can bring energy and creativity to the role.

You will have:

  • Experience working within a museum, heritage, learning or education environment.
  • Experience delivering activities, workshops or learning opportunities for children, young people and adults.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Strong organisational and administrative abilities with great attention to detail.
  • Confidence using databases, Microsoft Office applications and social media platforms.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers and external partners.
  • A creative approach and the ability to make learning accessible and engaging.
  • A full driving licence and the flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays when required.

Applicants should ensure they provide a supporting statement on the application form, as a CV alone is unlikely to demonstrate relevant skills, knowledge and experience in enough detail to enable us to assess their suitability for the position.

You’ll be part of a team that relies on each individual to play their part to the best of their ability. As well as the colleagues that you work closely with every day, you’ll also be part of Team Reading, playing your personal part in making Reading a successful and vibrant place.

Our vision is to ensure that Reading realises its potential as a great place to live, work and play, and that everyone shares the benefits of this success. Our values and behaviours guide how we will achieve this:
Work Together as one team - work collaboratively, with each other and with our partners, and demonstrate the Team Reading values in everything we do
Drive Efficiency - show initiative, be adaptable to change and put forward ideas to help improve delivery and efficiency. Take responsibility for our own learning and development and for reaching our potential.
Be Ambitious - be demanding of our own performance – striving to be even better – and be prepared to engage with and challenge leaders in a constructive and positive way.
Make a Difference to Reading - maintain the highest levels of customer service and be flexible and willing to provide the services needed at the time they are needed.

Our offer:
We offer a supportive environment to grow and develop your career with the opportunity to put your ideas across. Innovation and ambition are strongly encouraged, and you’ll get a great feel for that working in our friendly and collaborative environment.

A competitive salary alongside a range of benefits including:
