Job summary

Join the Planning Inspectorate as a Band 2 Planning Inspector within the Infrastructure, Decisions and Applications Service (IDAS) and play a key role in delivering high quality national infrastructure examinations across England and Wales.

This is a specialist role focused on complex infrastructure project examinations, where your work directly shapes sustainable growth and communities.

You will lead examinations, hearings and inquiries under a range of consenting regimes (including the Planning Act 2008, Planning & Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, Transport and Works Act, Highways Act and Electricity Act), ensuring decisions are evidence based, robust and delivered to demanding timescales.

Job description

What you’ll be doing:

  • Undertake complex casework, including examinations, inquiries, and hearings.
  • Act as a role model for the Inspector Profession, demonstrating best practice and embodying the Planning Inspectorate’s Core Values
  • Contribute to national infrastructure and planning decisions through high-quality, evidence based recommendations and reports
  • Support continuous improvement by helping to develop new ways of working, systems, and processes that enhance performance and customer experience
  • Contribute to organisational initiatives and strategic delivery across the Infrastructure, Decisions and Applications Service
  • Support and develop colleagues through coaching, mentoring, training, and quality assurance activities
  • Represent the Planning Inspectorate externally, sharing good practice and key messages with stakeholders

What makes this role unique?

This is not a generalist appeals role. You will focus on large scale infrastructure examinations, working on nationally significant and strategically important cases.

You could be:

  • Preparing for a major infrastructure examination, analysing evidence and shaping lines of inquiry
  • Leading hearings or examination sessions with stakeholders and the public
  • Writing reports that influence national planning outcomes

You’ll work primarily from home, with travel for site visits, hearings and examinations, giving you flexibility while staying connected to colleagues, panels and stakeholders.

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

  • Full / Chartered membership of a professional body (see separate list in candidate pack) relevant to the work of an Inspector.
  • Experience of working in at least one of the following areas of expertise: town planning, relevant area of law, transport, engineering, relevant area of health, environmental impact assessment, heritage, building/landscape design, energy, waste, water or wastewater.
  • Demonstrable ability to plan for and manage complex infrastructure casework with high levels of public interest and engagement, applying sound judgement and initiative to resolve issues quickly and effectively before, during and after events.
  • Demonstrable ability to assess, understand, critically analyse and weigh up complex and detailed information and evidence from multiple sources, to identify the issues which you'll need to focus your attention and reach robustly reasoned conclusions.
  • Demonstrable ability to produce clear, accurate and well‑structured decisions and reports that set out logical, convincing and evidence‑based conclusions on complex matters, exercising substantial personal responsibility and sound professional judgement in reaching robust and defensible outcomes.
  • Effective interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact authoritatively but sensitively with a diverse range of people.
  • Demonstrable record of acquiring knowledge quickly, identifying and actively pursuing personal CPD training needs and maintaining and developing professional skills and capability.
  • Significant experience in using industry‑standard digital tools to manage, analyse and present complex information in a regulatory or professional context.

Interview

If you are shortlisted, you will:
