
Casual General Assistant - Reading Museum

This is a varied role where no two days are the same – from welcoming visitors and supporting museum events to delivering tours and family activities and staffing our busy Reception and Box Office.

We are looking for friendly and engaging staff to come and join our casual team at Reading Museum. We are currently looking for individuals who can work across the Museum, including in the Museum galleries, shop, on our busy reception desk and who can also deliver family activities and events.

About you:
We are looking for staff who can work flexible hours across the week, who can work regular weekends along with occasional evenings. We need someone who is an effective communicator, confident, creative and friendly, and gives great customer service and remains calm under pressure.
You’ll be part of a welcoming and supportive team in a unique heritage setting, helping to create memorable experiences for our visitors. In return, we offer flexible hours, varied work, and the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of cultural and community events.
What you’ll do:
- Deliver exceptional customer service to visitors, clients, and guests
- Work flexibly across our Museum and reception teams
- Assist across a range of activities – from family activities to gallery tours
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety, and presentation across the building
- Provide security and care for museum collections on display
- Help set up for events and special occasions
As part of the Museum team, you will also be trained to deliver holiday activities for families, our weekly Rhymetime and object handling sessions as well as delivering our weekly tour of our Victorian Bayeux Tapestry and introductory talks around the Museum.
From time to time, you will also help with administrative tasks, including evaluating the views of our visitors and maintaining the presentation of the galleries.
When you cover reception desk you will act as the first point of contact for our visitors and clients, co-ordinating deliveries, selling Box Office tickets and Museum shop merchandise, operating tills, taking donations, keeping the shop tidy, and dealing with telephone bookings and enquiries.
