Our roles are either designated ‘site based’ or ‘home based’. ‘Site based’ roles can include up to two days a week working from home whilst ‘home based’ roles are based at home four days a week. Of course, managers designate which category roles are in based on the needs of the service and the circumstances.

Job Introduction

We’re recruiting a Cemeteries and Cremation Officer to join our Bereavement Services team at Milton Keynes City Council.

Our Bereavement Services team plays a vital role in supporting residents at some of the most difficult times in their lives. We manage and maintain our cemeteries and ensure services are delivered with dignity, care and professionalism. In this role, you’ll help provide high-quality cemetery services, supporting burials, scattering services and the day-to-day operation of our sites across Milton Keynes.

You’ll be based across multiple cemetery locations within Milton Keynes, working outdoors and within the community. This is a rewarding, practical role where no two days are the same. You’ll work closely with colleagues and members of the public, ensuring services are delivered respectfully and in line with legislation and best practice.


Site-Based role

This is a Site-Based role, and you’ll be expected to work from the designated workplace.

Role Responsibilities
  • Support the delivery of cemetery services, ensuring they are delivered in line with legislation, policies and best practice
  • Attend and assist with burials and scattering services, ensuring smooth and respectful operations
  • Carry out pre-service checks and ensure all activities are properly prepared and recorded
  • Support exhumations where required, following strict legal and procedural guidelines
  • Maintain accurate records using appropriate systems and ensure statutory requirements are met
  • Work with colleagues to ensure cemeteries are well managed, safe and provide a supportive environment for service users
Ideal Candidate
  • Basic understanding of relevant legislation, including public health, health and safety, and burial regulations
  • Able to show empathy, respect and professionalism when supporting people in emotionally sensitive situations
  • Well organised, with the ability to manage time effectively, even under pressure
  • Confident using IT systems, including Microsoft Office programmes
  • Full UK driving licence and able to travel between multiple sites during the day
  • Strong team player who reflects our values of being dedicated, respectful and collaborative

Full UK Manual Driving Licence

To be successful in this role, you’ll need a full UK Manual driving licence, we’ll ask you to provide evidence of your driving licence. We’re unable to confirm an appointment until this document is received. With Business Use.
