About the Role

Mid Sussex District Council is seeking a Civil Enforcement Officer to join our Contracts and Services team, helping to deliver an effective, fair and customer‑focused parking enforcement service across the district.

The role focuses on on‑street and off‑street parking patrols, ensuring compliance with Traffic Regulation Orders and reducing illegal parking through professional, proportionate enforcement. You will be a highly visible presence within the community, acting as a first point of contact for parking‑related enquiries and providing a helpful, approachable service to residents, businesses and visitors.

This role involves working both independently and as part of a team, using handheld technology and body‑worn cameras, and operating council vehicles as required.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Patrolling on‑street and off‑street parking areas on foot or by vehicle, in line with service instructions
  • Identifying parking contraventions and issuing Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) fairly, accurately and consistently
  • Dealing politely and professionally with enquiries from members of the public and signposting to other council services where appropriate
  • Recording evidence using handheld devices and body‑worn cameras
  • Checking parking signs, lines and notices, and reporting missing, damaged or incorrect signage
  • Carrying out basic equipment checks, including parking machines and enforcement equipment
  • Identifying and reporting abandoned vehicles and other parking‑related issues
  • Working in accordance with relevant legislation, Traffic Regulation Orders and council procedures

You will work closely with fellow Civil Enforcement Officers and supervisors to ensure the service delivers high standards of customer care, compliance and safety.

About You

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of working in a public‑facing role, with the confidence to deal tactfully with a wide range of people
  • Good observational skills and the ability to record information accurately
  • A strong commitment to customer service and to acting professionally at all times
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • A current, clean UK manual driving licence

You will be comfortable working outdoors for prolonged periods and willing to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and bank holidays as part of a rota.

Full training will be provided.
