Job summary

As a Level 2a Compliance Investigator within the Retail Compliance team, you will play a hands‑on role in identifying and addressing risks in the retail energy market, ensuring suppliers act fairly and consumers—particularly the most vulnerable—are protected. You will lead and contribute to impactful compliance investigations, using data‑led analysis and sound judgement to shape evidence‑based outcomes that deliver real consumer benefit. Job description

Investigation and Case Management

  • Leading or contributing to compliance activity in relation to energy suppliers, producing high quality, timely, and robust analysis of potential issues
  • Promote Ofgem’s compliance operating principles of ‘find early, fix quickly, compensate fairly’ by supporting early identification of risks, encouraging swift resolution, and ensuring fair redress is delivered where harm occurs.
  • Making evidence-based recommendations: identifying & escalating key issues as well as assisting in the management of risk.
  • Leading, organising and project managing significant pieces of project work, coordinating closely with colleagues across the directorate to understand the impact of your work in terms of resource and output.
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to gather and document intelligence on compliance to inform casework, including engaging with whistle-blowers when relevant
  • Build capability in the team by driving continuous improvement of our processes and practices, identifying, and embracing opportunities for change, and championing these across the team.

Stakeholder Management

  • Effectively communicating the benefits, challenges, and trade-offs of potential compliance actions to senior colleagues​.
  • Ensure all stakeholder engagement is anchored in improving consumer outcomes, prioritising issues based on the scale and nature of consumer harm.
  • Working collaboratively across team boundaries and engaging with key Ofgem functions, developing close links to manage risks and issues​.
  • Representing Ofgem externally and building constructive stakeholder relationships to ensure challenges and issues are identified and resolved in consumers’ interests.
  • Ensuring that guidance given to external stakeholders including suppliers is accurate, legally robust and reflective of the relevant legislation or licence conditions.

  • Demonstrable experience of applying data led analysis to identify risks and make evidenced, proportionate judgements that inform conclusions and recommended actions. (LEAD)
  • Ability to clearly and persuasively communicate complex issues to non-technical audiences, tailoring messages to support transparency, understanding and constructive challenge.
  • Ability to proactively prioritise and plan your work and deliver quality outputs in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to build credible, professional relationships and influence stakeholders through evidence based challenge, constructive dialogue and clear expectations.
