Job summary

We're looking for highly motivated individuals with strong data and analytical capabilities to join Ofgem as a Compliance Investigator. This role plays a crucial part in protecting millions of energy consumers during a period of significant market challenge, ensuring suppliers comply with key price protection mechanisms such as the Default Tariff Cap, Payment Method Levelisation and Renewable Derogations. You will contribute directly to high‑impact regulatory work that helps maintain fair pricing and puts consumer protection at the heart of decision‑making. We are seeking candidates who can navigate and understand complex models, undertake both quantitative and qualitative analysis, and deliver clear, concise insights that inform senior colleagues and shape policy development. Using large datasets in Excel is essential for this role, and you will be expected to bring a high level of analytical experience to support investigations, assess compliance, and identify risks across the energy retail market. The role also offers the opportunity to work collaboratively across multi‑disciplinary teams, engaging with stakeholders inside and outside Ofgem to gather intelligence, manage casework and contribute to continuous improvement in our regulatory approach. Job description

Key Responsibilities and Outputs

Specific responsibilities will vary depending on the workstreams in which you will cover, but are likely to include:

Analytical

  • Quantitative and qualitative analytical and commercial skills and/or the ability to understand complex concepts and work with uncertainty to solve problems and contribute to effective policy recommendations.
  • Good data analysis skills and ability to apply wider policy and strategic context to interpret and present clear, concise, and actionable information and insight to senior colleagues and decision makers.
  • Undertaking high quality research and proactively identifying applicable evidence and analytical methods that contributes to the development of the evidence base to support policy creation.
  • Engaging with internal stakeholders, and other analytical and policy specialists where necessary, to scope and agree analytical input to develop policy options.
  • Working collaboratively with peers to support, quality assure and build others’ analytical capability.
  • Identifying opportunities to use analysis, including developing new frameworks or using established frameworks, to progress decisions.

Investigation and Case Management

  • Leading or contributing to compliance or enforcement activity in relation to energy suppliers, scheme participants and other regulated companies, producing high quality, timely, and robust analysis of potential issues.
  • Making evidence-based recommendations: identifying & escalating key issues as well as assisting in the management of risk.
  • Leading, organising and project managing significant pieces of project work, coordinating closely with colleagues across the directorate to understand the impact of your work in terms of resource and output.
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to gather and document intelligence on compliance to inform casework, including engaging with whistle-blowers when relevant.
  • Build capability in the team by driving continuous improvement of our processes and practices, identifying, and embracing opportunities for change, and championing these across the team.

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

  • High level of analytical experience using large data sets in Excel [Lead criteria].
  • Experience of collecting, investigating, and analysing qualitative and quantitative data and evidence to arrive at conclusions and recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that effectively communicate complex issues to non-expert audiences.
  • Ability to proactively prioritise and plan your work and deliver quality outputs in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to build effective relationships and successfully influence challenging external stakeholders.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of Python and SQL
