Job summary

You’ll work in a fast-paced Digital Channels team to create and manage clear, accurate and user-led content for the Home Office intranet and other internal channels.

We design and publish content to help staff find policy and guidance they need to do their jobs, helping the Home Office to keep the UK safe and secure. We also train and support channel owners to ensure their content meets writing and accessibility standards.

You will work flexibly on business-as-usual tasks and projects.

You’ll know how to:

  • Make complex language and processes simple to understand.
  • Make the case for designing content based on user needs.
  • Explain your decisions clearly.

You’ll work closely, and build relationships, with our internal communications teams, content designers working on GOV.UK and online services, Home Office Digital technical teams, operational staff and policy officials.

Job description

Main responsibilities

Your main day to day responsibilities will be:

  • Scope, write and edit digital content for Home Office internal channels, such as the intranet.
  • Identify user needs and agreeing the right content approach.
  • Ensure content on Home Office internal channels, such as the intranet, is equally accessible to all staff.
  • Support and train stakeholders to ensure their content is relevant and accurate, and meets writing and accessibility standards.
  • Lead projects to improve sections of the intranet.
  • Monitor the performance of content, identifying ways to improve the end-to-end user journey, and use data to inform content strategies.
  • Keep up-to-date with the Government Digital Service (GDS) content design developments.
  • Line manage and support junior content designers when required.

  • Content design: writing and editing content in line with defined processes and standards, and making complex language simple to understand for a non-specialist audience.
  • Evidence-based design: using analytics, feedback and research to understand user needs and to inform content decisions.
  • Stakeholder management: independently engages with a range of stakeholders, advocating for UCD principles.
  • Accessibility and inclusion: assessing the accessibility of online content and advising teams how to fix issues so it is inclusive and accessible to all.
  • Collaboration: participating and facilitating group work, seeking feedback on your work and giving others constructive feedback.
  • Communicate, persuade and advocate: clearly articulating to stakeholders the benefits of taking a user-centred approach, based on evidence.

Selection process details

Sift Stage

Interview Stage

Candidates reaching the required standard will then be invited to attend an interview. The interview will assess your technical skills (SFIA Framework ) and experience-based questions

At the beginning of the interview, you will be required to deliver a 10 minute presentation based on a task. The presentation topic (and task) will be provided to you at least 48 hours before your interview.

If you are invited to an interview, you will be required to bring a range of documentation for the purposes of establishing identity and to aid any pre-employment checks. Please see the attached list of Home Office acceptable ID documents.

Sift and interview dates

Sift will be conducted week commencing 10th February to 18th February 2026

Interviews will be held week commencing 4th March 2026

Interviews will be conducted remotely via MS Teams.

UK residency and security requirements

Please note that this role requires Security Check (SC) clearance, which would normally need 5 years’ UK residency in the past 5 years.

However, in exceptional circumstances security clearance applications for candidates who have been present in the UK for at least 3 of last 5 years may be considered. Failure to meet this residency requirement will result in your security clearance application being rejected.

Capability Allowance

This role has access to a Digital Capability-Based Allowance – Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). Applicants who are successful at interview will be invited to complete a Capability and Skills Assessment post-interview. Any allowance awarded will be based on the assessment of your capability against the six skills advertised for this role. Please see the attached candidate pack for information.

The allowance values are set by the Home Office, subject to remaining in a qualifying role. This allowance is non-contractual, subject to an annual review and could be withdrawn at any time

For both new entrants and existing civil servants, the total compensation offer is a combination of base salary and, if applicable, a capability-based allowance. The pay ranges for this role are National: £46,062 - £49,287 and London: £50,182 - £53,695. New entrants to the Civil Service will start on the pay range minimum. For existing civil servants, our policies on level transfer and promotion will apply.
