Job summary

The Government Digital Service (GDS) is the digital centre of government. We are responsible for setting, leading and delivering the vision for a modern digital government.

This role is on the multidisciplinary Service Standard and Manual team. The Service Standard provides the principles for creating and running good public services. The Service Manual helps teams to create and run public services that meet the Service Standard.

Content designers on the Service Standard and Service Manual work with stakeholders and subject matter experts across GDS and wider government. They update, iterate and improve standards and guidance, ensuring they meet the needs of service teams and reflect emerging good practice, resulting in better services for users. You’ll be joining a thriving community of content designers in GDS and across government, with lots of opportunities to gain new skills and get advice and support from other content and user-centred design professionals.

Job description

As a content designer you will:

  • create, improve and manage user-centered content, using analytics, user feedback, user research and other sources of information
  • contribute to and help develop content principles and templates
  • identify the needs of users, write user stories, design content plans, create and publish content
  • identity and collaborate effectively with stakeholders, working with them to understand policy changes and ensure factual accuracy
  • help develop content strategies, and apply them
  • contribute to the cross-government and GDS content community

Person specification

We’re interested in people with skills and experience in:

  • creating, improving and publishing high-quality guidance content that meets user needs
  • using content management systems and content production processes to publish content
  • using insights and data, including analytics, user feedback and user research, to make decisions about content and how to improve it
  • working with stakeholders or clients to build relationships and understand their issues, while maintaining content quality and using evidence to explain decisions made
  • working in an agile way, using agile methodology to prioritise and manage different pieces of work and adapt to changing circumstances
  • identifying, implementing and communicating improvements to content strategies, policies, processes and ways of working

Office attendance
The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
DSIT does not normally offer full home working (i.e. working at home); but we do offer a variety of flexible working options (including occasionally working from home).

Selection process details

The standard selection process for roles at GDS consists of:

  • a simple application screening process - We only ask for a CV and cover letter of up to 750 words. Important tip - please ensure that your cover letter includes how you meet the skills and experience listed in the “person specification” section above
  • a task to be completed remotely within 1 week
  • a 60 minute online interview

Depending on how many applications we get, there might also be an extra stage before the video interview, for example a phone interview or a technical exercise.

Panel interviews: Starting from the week commencing 15th June 2026

Candidates that do not pass the interview but have demonstrated an acceptable standard may be considered for similar roles at a lower grade.

A reserve list will be held for a period of 12 months, from which further appointments can be made.
